Stone Mtn., Ga.- Graveside services for Mrs. Gloria Stephens will be 12:00EDT Friday, June 15, 2018 at Stephens Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, Al. Visitation is 4 - 7 today at Battle & Battle Funeral Home.
Gloria Lockhart Stephens was born June 10, 1950 in Columbus, Georgia to the late Alma Quinn Lockhart and the late Johnnie Lockhart. The youngest of four, Gloria was raised in a tight-knit community entrenched in love, faith, and solidarity.
Gloria attended and graduated from South Girard High School in 1968 in honor of her parents who were unable to complete their education. Upon her graduation from high school, Gloria matriculated to Talladega College where she was initiated into the Alpha Zeta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
From 1972-1974, she was employed in the Muscogee County School System in Columbus, GA as a school teacher at Rothschild Junior High School and Jordan High School.
On Saturday, March 30, 1974, she joined her best friend of 11 years, Richard Lamar Stephens, in marriage.
Gloria is survived by: her husband, Richard Lamar Stephens; Sons, Rev. Richard Lamar Stephens, II ( Latisha Heartfield Stephens) and Dr. Dyron Jetrell Stephens and his intended Karris Mirchelle Whaley; her older sister Veverlyn Lockhart Lee and her husband Karl Lee; her older brother Lamar Lockhart and his wife Eulalia, brother Johnnie Lockhart (Sarah). She is also remembered and survived by 15 nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews along with a host of friends.

I am going to truly miss my sister-in-law, Gloria. She was a beautiful person. She was the big sister I did not have: shipping homemade cookies to me as a college student, the White Diamond perfume Christmas presents... She was a role model to me and many others, especially, her students. Her husband and sons have an angel because she is home in Heaven. Rest In Peace Gloria!

I was so very sad to hear of the passing of Mrs. Stephens. I took her Math classes throughout 2009 when I was a high schooler at Lakeside. Above all I remember what great habits she instilled in me and all of my classmates. Because of her, I learned the value of preparation and repetition in learning. I'll never forget her smile when we did well on a test. Truly a face and name I'll never forget.

Ms. Stephens was my math teacher at Lakeside High School. She was one of the hardest teachers I have ever had...but also the one I remember the most. Its teachers like her that prepared us for the world and I will be forever grateful to her for that. May God bless and comfort her family.
