Mullins

April 12, 2015
Atlantic Beach, FL- Major Harold E. (Hal) Mullins (retired), 90, passed away April 12, 2015. Born in Logan, WV, he was an Atlantic Beach resident since 1964.
Hal was a veteran of the US Army enlisting in 1940 at the age of 15 and served in World War II and the Korean War. During WWII he was assigned to the 3rd Armor and 60th Infantry Regiment and was among the first American troops to fight during the invasion landings in North Africa. He also took part in the D-Day landings at Utah Beach. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
During the Korean War, he served in the Far East Command Liaison Detachment (a forerunner of the Special Forces Green Beret) and assigned to the Airborne Section tasked with disrupting supply lines in North Korea.
After serving his country, he received his Masters degree from the University of Georgia and became a teacher and Dean at Fletcher High School, retiring in 1985.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Charlotte; daughter Lynne Hahn; granddaughters Melissa Cook (John); Victoria Hahn (Craig Seeley); and great grandchildren Johnny Cook (Marlena) and Jenny Cook (Logan).
Hal was a devoted family man, avid golfer and gin rummy player at Selva Marina Country Club. His former students from Fletcher High School fondly remember him for his tough, but fair and caring nature.
Interment will be at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Columbus, GA on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 11 a.m.

Hal Mullins was one of those "real" people. The sort who everybody knew and everybody loved. It's been a while now since the last time I saw him but when I did, I knew him and he knew me and his hug was the same as always! He was a great man, a great teacher and to so, so many...a great friend and supporter. God Bless you really awfully good Mr. Mullins.

Mr. Mullins was one of the finest people I have ever had the pleasure to know. A gentle giant....kind and compassionate. He truly loved and cared about all his "kids" and and always had our backs. To all my Fletcher alumni peeps,we have a new Guardian Angel who STILL has our backs. Rest in Peace, Dean Mullins. Love and condolences to Charlotte and the family.

Mr. Mullins was a great influence on my life during my academic years at Fletcher High and always continued my deep intense history by his stories of landing at Normandy during World War II and various other military stories that meant a lot to him and the classes he taught. I will always remember him and everything he meant to me. I will see you soon, my friend.
