Columbus, Georgia- Muscogee County Sheriff's Sergeant Howard Ray Johnson, Jr. 62, of Columbus died Wednesday, November 26, 2014 in Omaha, Ga. doing what he loved the most.
Funeral services with Military and Law Enforcement Honors will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Sgt. Johnson was born January 30, 1952 in Phoenix, Az. son of Mary Taylor Sears of Phoenix, Az. Sgt. Johnson retired after 21 years in the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam and Grenada. He also served as a private contractor training the Iraqi Police Force. Sgt. Johnson's career included serving with the Columbus Police Department and was currently a Sergeant at the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office. He was on the Executive Board of The Fraternal Order of Police Karl F. Eidam Lodge #9 in Columbus, Ga.
Sgt. Johnson was preceded in death by his step father James Arnold Sears.
Other than his mother, Sgt. Johnson is survived by his wife Sue Turner Johnson of Columbus, Ga., three daughters; Shannon Davis (Danny) Ft. Irwin, Ca., Tiana Johnson of Phenix City, Al., Trina Johnson of Columbus, Ga., three sisters; June Waltermire of Phoenix, Az., Joyce Robinson of Columbus, Ga., Gloria Herrington of Phoenix, Az., two brothers; Kenneth Johnson of Phoenix, Az., Carl Johnson, Columbus, Ga., six grandchildren Bryce, Aiden, Madison, Macie, Eli, Stella and his mother-in-law Willie Mae Fuller of Columbus, Ga.
Flowers will be accepted, those so desiring may make contributions to the Fraternal Order of Police Karl F. Eidam Lodge # 9 P.O. Box 8404 Columbus, Georgia 31908 in memory of Sgt. Howard Ray Johnson, Jr.

I was sorry to hear of SGT Johnson's passing. He exemplified what an outstanding correctional official is and can be. Nursing staff within the MCSD jail, other officers and inmates all seemed to show such respect for him. All of our prayers thoughts and memories go out to you, his family.

Sad to hear about Ray's death. We went to Eddy Jr. High together. I saw him several times while he was with Columbus Police Dept. A fine man that will be missed.

I am saddened to hear the news of rays death this past week.We have been friends for forty yrs. Remembering good times at eddy jr high. I know he loved his family very much and loved his jobs in the military and law enforcement. He will be missed. Im glad we had good times and he was a great friend, husband, father, son , brother and grandfather.
