Dr. Howell Anderson "Andy" Wasden, III
June 19, 1944 - March 17, 2025
Warm Springs, Georgia - Dr. Howell Anderson Wasden, III, of Warm Springs, died Monday, March 17, 2025 at his home.
Dr. Wasden was born on June 19, 1944 in Augusta, GA, the son of Howell Anderson Wasden, Jr., MD and Alice Elizabeth Medlock Wasden, RN. He was raised in Pavo, GA, across the street from a fifteen bed hospital and clinic owned and operated by his parents. He was an honor graduate of Brooks County High School in the class of 1962, where he played football, basketball, ran track, and held multiple service academic club and class offices. He then obtained a bachelor's degree in science from Mercer University in 1966. At Mercer he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and participated in intramural football and basketball. Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Wasden taught and coached J.V. football at Stratford Academy in Macon from 1966-1967. He met Janice Marlene Loftin and the two were married on June 3, 1967. They were happily married until Ms. Janice's passing in February 2010. He continued in education at Brooks County High School and Stratford Academy until 1970. He earned a Master's Degree of Education with a concentration in science from Mercer University in 1970. He then obtained a Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in 1974. He completed his family medicine residency training at the Medical Center in Columbus, GA in 1977 and earned his American Academy of Family Physicians Board certification in 1978. He then established his own family practice after settling in Warm Springs later in 1978, and operated it until his retirement in the summer of 2010. His practice was run with the help of his loyal staff, most of whom were with him the entire time.
He thought highly of his mentors and those who helped in his journey, and was pleased to have another local doctor, Dr. Calvin Jackson, as one of those mentors. He also was grateful and relieved to have Dr. Will Cunningham, come to Meriwether county and assume his practice.
Above all, Dr. Wasden was a family man. He truly enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren, treasuring the memories they made together. He enjoyed travelling and caring for his horses at his Rocky Ford farm.
Dr. Wasden was well immersed in the community, thus leading him to serve in numerous leadership roles. He served as the Meriwether County prison physician and medical examiner for many years. He served on the citizen's advisory council of the RWSR citizen's advisory council for the Outdoor Therapeutic Program and Camp physician, Cub and Boy Scouts, and as team doctor and JV football coach at Flint River Academy. He was a member of the Georgia and American Academies of Family Physicians, Medical Association of Georgia, Southern Medical Association, and served on the Board of Directors at F&M Bank.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Marlene Loftin Wasden.
