Ida Maye Robinson Harrison
August 3, 1917 - February 8, 2021
Columbus, Georgia - Mrs. Ida Maye Harrison, 103, of Columbus entered into eternal rest on Monday, February 8, 2021 at her residence. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 in the Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, GA. Rev. Joseph Baker, will be officiating according to the Charles E. Huff's International Funeral Home, Inc. Viewing will be held from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Monday, February 15, 2021 at the funeral home located at 927 - 5th Avenue, Columbus.
Mrs. Ida Maye Robinson Harrison was born on August 3, 1917 to the late Henry and Pearl Robinson in Augustine, FL. She graduated from Excelsior High School in St. Augustine, received her baccalaureate degree from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL and further matriculated at Chicago University and Tuskegee University. While attending FAMU, she played at the university's original girl's basketball team. Since she was an outstanding athlete, she was enshrined into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. After marrying the late Leo T. Harrison, Sr., she moved to Columbus and joined St. James A.M.E. Church where she was a devout and active member serving on the Stewardess Board Number One and the Willing Workers Club.
Mrs. Harrison's exemplary career as an educator began at the Pine Park High School in Havana, FL. After moving to Columbus, she was employed as a teacher in the Muscogee County School District. She retired from teaching after thirty-five years yet she continued servicing the community. She was a life member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association and the Muscogee Retired Educators Association. She has held membership in the Columbus Community Center, the Benning nights and the West Georgia/East Alabama Florida A&M University Alumni Association. She was a dedicated and proud Life Member and Golden Soror of the Gamma Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she held several offices, served on many committees and was awarded numerous commendations.
In addition to her parents and her husband Mrs. Harrison is preceded in death by her brother, Hayward Robinson, Amsterdam, Holland; her sister, Celestine R. Nicks, Augustine, FL.
Surviving her departure with cherished memories are a devoted son, Leo T. Harrison (Sandra), Columbus; niece, Joycelyn Nicks, Newnan GA; Godson, Kenneth Huff (Desta), Lafayette, CA; foster son, Robert Taylor; foster daughter, Jacqueline Esters, Columbus; step granddaughters, Christie Holt (John) and Joy Wells (Darnell) both of Columbus; special friends, Leonard and Georgie Esters, Columbus and Dr. Karen Clark, Newnan, GA and many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. James A.M.E. Church Bus Ministry.
