Joseph Binns Obituary

Joseph Marion Binns

July 13, 1942 - January 5, 2025

Atlanta, Georgia - Joe Binns passed away at home on January 5, 2025, leaving a legacy of love and plenty of advice for his family. Joe was born on July 13, 1942, in Columbus, Georgia. He was the oldest of four children born to Alice and Dr. Joseph Binns, Sr. He attended elementary and junior high school in Columbus. In high school, he attended Darlington Prep in Rome, GA, and he graduated from Georgia Military Academy, now Woodward Academy, where he was an outstanding wrestler.

He left the University of Alabama for active military service and served in the Army Reserves as an Airborne demolition specialist. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Georgia, married Carol Mobley, and had his first job in Jacksonville, Florida. The family moved to Atlanta and he worked at C&S Bank. In 1983, the family moved to Columbus where Joe started a commercial moving business serving the southeast. After returning to Atlanta in the 1990s, he expanded Southern Relocation Services to include projects along much of the East coast.

Joe earned his pilot's license at 18, got his commercial license at 19, and worked for his uncles' commercial aviation business as a charter pilot while still in college. He loved fishing and long pontoon boat rides, golf, motorcycles and a good cigar. His favorite spectator sport was Braves baseball, but he never stopped lamenting the designated hitter rule. His favorite participatory sport was arguing about politics. Some of his happiest times were spent fuming about the state of the country while watching the national news.

Joe and Carol loved to travel -- especially to Grapefruit League Spring Training games in Florida; St. John, USVI; and to Paris, but they loved their cabin on the Cartecay River in north Georgia best.

Joe loved his family and took pride in their accomplishments as children and adults. He faithfully attended their games and wrestling matches, coached their teams, and was an active supporter of their academic and professional lives.

Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol Mobley Binns, his sons Anthony Armas (Pam) of Bremen, Joseph Binns III (Melissa) of Atlanta, Ward Binns (Wendy) of Atlanta, and his grandchildren, Grayson Abbott, Nathan and Isabelle Armas, Daniel Binns, and Josephine Binns; a sister, Cathy Johnpeer, a brother and sister-in-law Mike and Susan B. Binns, and a sister-in-law, Susan N. Binns; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Allen Binns.

A memorial service will take place later. In his memory, Joe requested donations to The Salvation Army.

To The BINNS Family:
I worked w/ Joe from the Fall of 1990 'til the Fall of 1995. I was in CIGNA'S Philadelphia Real Estate Department, and Joe was a preferred vendor / mover. Together, as 'chronological peers' we moved CIGNA offices. From Miami, to Dallas, from Buffalo, to Charlotte, Atlanta to Denver, Nashville to Sacramento. As a vendor, Joe NEVER failed me. However, it was his quick wit, brains, generosity, and simple zest for life that allowed us to bond tightly as friends. Several weeks ago I had reached out to Joe. Sadly, to no avail. I came across his obituary yesterday. My prayers & best wishes go out to his family. And "yes, I'm sad he's gone," but his memory will always leave a smile on my face.

Joe, a friend, since FIRST GRADE can be summed up in one word...."COMPLETE". Who better to take the 1964 boat trip from Dillingham Street Bridge in Columbus 200 miles down the Chattahoochee River to Panama City and into the Gulf of Mexico and end up beaching the 15ft outboard on the beach at THE OLD DUTCH. When it is all said and done, We were friends. He is surely
with Allen and others in that PLACE OF PEACE. Condolencies to the family.

My thoughts and prayers to Carol and the rest of the family. I first met Joe through Buckhead Baseball and then discovered that Allen and I had been fraternity brothers at Emory.
May God grant you His peace and comfort.

Joe always had a twinkle in his eyes and a playful demeanor. He was a conversationalist with a southern flare. He was witty and quick with a reply. He was captivating and a joy to be around. I will miss him terribly. He was a character in the best sense of the word...
