Lucy Frank Barrow Champion April 10, 1941- September 15, 2005 LANETT, AL— Lucy Frank Barrow Champion, age 64, was returned to our Lord on September 15 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on April 10, 1941 in Lanett, AL, to the late Frank and Lucille Barrow. Dedicated to Christ as a young adult, Lucy was a member of the First Baptist Church Lanett where she was director of the 5th and 6th grade Sunday School department for 25 years. She also served as WMU director, Vacation Bible School Director, and was very active in the Jolly Seniors group and helping with children's church. Lucy graduated from Lanett High School in 1959, where she was Miss Senior High, a member of the Beta Club, the Pep Club, and the band. She graduated from Howard College in Birmingham in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. At Howard, she was an active member and President of her sorority, Delta Zeta. As a junior Lucy was crowned Maid of Cotton, an honor she has held twice. She was also Business Manager for the Bull Pup publication, a senior class officer, a member of Kappa Omieron Pi, and Eta Epsilon (two honor sororities). Post graduate studies included a Master of Education and a sixth year certificate in Psychology from Auburn University. Lucy was dedicated to the care and education of both children and young adults and held teaching and counseling positions at the following schools: Dawson Street Elementary, LaGrange, GA, Troup County High School, LaGrange, GA, Riverdale Elementary School, Riverdale, GA, and Clayton Jr. College, Morrow, GA. Lucy ended her long career at Southern Union State Community College where she taught until her retirement in 2002. She was honored in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and was an active in Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (an organization that promotes the professional and personal growth of women educators). Other professional achievements include: West Point Pilot Club, American Heart Association (board member 1988-1989), Executive Board of Directors of East Alabama Mental Health Center (President 1999-2001), Advisory Board of Directors West Point Goodwill Industries (lifetime member). Affectionately known as "Miss Lucy" she will be fondly remembered in her community for her wisdom, loving smile and for being such a "Southern Lady". Lucy Barrow Champion is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Bill Champion; two children, Frank and Laura Lane Champion; a daughter-in-law, Misty Champion; and her three beautiful grandchildren, Chandlor, Cooper, and Carson Champion. A service will be held on Sunday, September 18th at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church Lanett, conducted by Rev. Gene Webb and Dr. Hugh Richardson. Burial will be held at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point, GA, Saturday, Sept. 17 from 5 to 9 EDT.
