I was privileged to have known General Carley and work for him at Ft Benning and then as his Exective Officer when he was the MACVJ3. He was a great Officer and Leader. I talked with him over the years and am saddened at his passing

I was John's command helicopter pilot when he commanded the 2d Bde, 1st Infantry Division, and our paths crossed again at Fort Benning in 1971 when he was the assistant commandant of the Infantry School. I have seldom met a finer officer and gentleman. To his family, your loss is mine too. I have many fond memories, and a few good stories too!

John and my father were West Point classmates and good friends throughout their Army careers. I had the pleasure of meeting John and Emily when they moved to the Clemson area and thoroughly enjoyed their friendship. He was very outspoken about all the changes at the Academy but he always expressed himself as a professional and as a graduate who cared about the institution. John was an American hero whose exceptional service to our Nation in two wars should be noted and appreciated. Well done, sir. Be thou at peace.

I was very saddened to read of Gen. Carley's passing in today's Northwest Florida Daily News. It was my pleasure to type his hand-delivered columns over the years they were published in our local newspaper. Always the epitome of a gentleman, Mr. Carley was so nice and kind and a very humble man. You never would have guessed he was a general. He insisted on being called John. I have often thought of him over the years. He will be truly missed. I am honored to have known him. My condolences to the family.

I was MG Carley's S-1 part of the year that he commanded the 2d Bde, 2d Inf. Div. He was the best boss I ever had. He was a true leader, and remained calm no matter what the situation. Bill Putman
