I served with you in Iraq, I saw you daily and we always smiled and said hello to each other. The day of the accident I was back at the FOB were we were recrutited for search and rescue missions. The day we got the news you were found my heart stopped and bleed for you. Out of all the losses we faced in 2nd ACR yours hurt the most, your memorial was unberable and I nearly fell apart giving a final salute to your boots. It has been 8 years since you passed and I often think of you. You were brave, young and always brought a smile to my face even tho we were in the most difficult of places. Thank you, and please know you have never been forgotten <3

Mike Stewart in Boqubah, Iraq, proudly wearing Marquis Whitaker's Hero Bracelet

Mike Stewart

September 30, 2008

I have had the honor of wearing Marquis's hero bracelet for a couple of years now. Being from Columbus, I requested a soldier from Columbus and was honored to get Marquis. I grew up around the corner on Greenbriar Drive, and went to Kendrick High. I am now serving on a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Diyala Province Iraq. This picture was taken yesterday in downtown Boqubah while I was down there for a meeting on a project. You can see I am wearing Marquis's bracelet in the photo. Marquis is buried not far from my mother at Ft. Benning. I visit him when I go there to visit her.
God Bless you all and the troops that continue to serve our country.

To: The Whitaker Family,

PFC Whitaker & I happened to cross paths one day as he was getting off from a convoy to Camp Muleskinner in Iraq. Seeing that he was acting sorta shy, I began to tease him and another soldier about how cool they were looking while wearing their "Cat Daddy", shades, lol..He immediately started to smile...and I thought to myself, finally, I got him (PFC Whitaker) to say something...lol...After we briefly talked about how ready we were to go home. I told PFC Whitaker and the other soldier that it was very nice talking to them and advised them to get out of the heat. I had no idea that that would actually be my 1st and last time speaking w/ him.

Although, I didn't know him personally; it was in deed a pleasure to have met & served with him...What a great soldier! We held a Memorial Service in his honor while in Iraq and I must say there wasn't a dry eye in the bldg.

To the Whitaker family please know that Marquis will be forever in ours hearts!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Marquis, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I didn't personally know you or your family, but saw this terrible news online and felt compelled to say something! - Thank you for your service to our country and keeping me and my family safe, secure and free - You paid the ultimate price for my freedom with your life and I am forever grateful - A simple thank you seems so little at a time like this - I pray for the family and friends you left behind and hope that they can somehow find peace at this very difficult time - God Bless you and all who knew you

I recently visited Ft. Benning, GA to attend my sons graduation from basic training. (9-29-06) While there I purchased a bracelet with PFC Marquis Whitaker's name on it and some of the information about him. I found myself wishing I knew more about him, and also the circumstances of his death. (such as was it an accident, or was his vehicle hit intentionally, but could find no other information.) I want his family to know that even though I never knew him, he will always be remembered not only by me,and my family, but also all who read this bracelet. I will wear it always to ensure this.
I am so sorry for your loss. I just wish I had the pleasure of knowing him.

As the State Chaplain of the Georgia Sons Of The American Revolution and speaking for our President, George Thurmond and more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia, may I most humbly express the condolences of a grateful Society. Pvt. Whitaker, wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!!
