Atlanta, Ga- Matthew Thomas Johnson, 33 of Atlanta, Georgia and formerly of Hamilton, Georgia passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 4, 2016 in the Auditorium of Harris County High School in Hamilton, Georgia. The family will visit with friends and loved ones following the service at the high school.
Matt was born June 28, 1983 in Columbus, Georgia to Phyllis Nix Johnson and Tommy Lee Johnson. Matt was a beautiful soul and he inspired everyone he interacted with. He was kind, humble, funny, smart, creative, cared for others before himself and deeply loved his family and friends. Matt was a gifted musician from an early age. In middle school he was the Head Chorister of the Columbus Boychoir, in high school he was the First Chair Trumpet at HCHS, and he went on to form his band The Dirty Souls. He was the lead singer, song writer, guitarist and played alongside his brother, Adam who was the drummer. Matt found his true passion in teaching music to young children through private lessons and camps. He not only helped these children discover their own musical passion and talent, but he also helped them through personal challenges by being their friend and mentor. As a child and teenager, Matt was active in the 4-H club and became a Master 4Her; he achieved a black belt in Taekwondo and played tennis and soccer for HCHS. Matt and his brother Adam enjoyed making others laugh together. He attended Valdosta State University.
Matt was part of a loving family. Survivors include his parents, Tommy and Phyllis Johnson of Hamilton, Georgia; sister, Julie (Danny) White of San Mateo, CA; brother, Adam Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia; girlfriend, Lyndsay Sweeney of Atlanta, Georgia; nieces, Avery and Elle White; maternal grandmother, Ollie Jo Nix; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Matt was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Henry Wilson and Tura Christine Johnson, and his maternal grandfather, Garland A. Nix, Sr.

I'll always remember the handsome and polite young man at 4-H events, in school, and later as he pursued his love of music. He had a positive impact and influence on many peers, youth and adults in his short lifetime especially my kids. I will always remember him being surrounded by all the cute girls at 4-H competitions and camp. You have many wonderful memories to cherish and these will keep you strong.

We've only known Matt for a few years but will always remember how he welcomed us the first time we went to see the band play. Every time thereafter he'd go out of his way to come say hi.
