Steve Carney Obituary

Steven Alan Carney January 30, 1949 - December 20, 2009 PHENIX CITY, AL— CSM Steve Alan Carney, 60, U.S. Army, Retired, of Phenix City, Alabama died Sunday, December 20, 2009 in Chattahoochee County, GA. Memorial services with full military honors will be 1:00 p.m. EDT Saturday, December 26th at the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Phenix City Chapel. A private interment may be held at a later date. The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. CSM Carney was born January 30, 1949 in Roswell, New Mexico, son of the late Harry Richard Carney and Grace Elvira Peters Carney of Lexington Park, MD. He was a veteran of Vietnam, Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He served his country honorably for 30 years prior to retiring in 1997. He was the recipient of numerous military awards including the Army Commendation Medal (6 awards). After retirement from the Army Mr. Carney was employed by ITT at Ft. Benning. Survivors other than his mother include his wife of 41 years, Nancy Stommel Carney of Phenix City, AL; three children, Brian Keith Carney of Lake Elsinore, CA, Sherry Shierenberg of Phenix City, AL and Ssgt. Eric David Carney, U.S. Marine Corps, Hawaii; sisters, Gwen Wilhelm of Valley Lee, MD and Kim Jackson of New Mexico; nine grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars or the Disabled American Veterans. To offer condolences, please visit www.striffler-hamby.com.

Dear Nancy and family. Vic and I just heard from Grace about Steve. So sorry for your loss of a good husband and friend. We have very fond memories of your family along with Grace and Buzz here in New Mexico. Our visits with you and Steve were short but nice and we will always remember you. Sorry to hear of your loss. I relised something was wrong when his red truck didnt come home after a few days. Will miss watching him cutting the grass, and keeping the yard so beautiful. I know you will miss him, my thoughts & prayers are with you.
