Columbus , GA- Wallace Eugene Griner died Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Spring Harbor in Columbus, Georgia, at the age of 82.
He was born May 15, 1929 to Arnold and Maude Harper Griner, in Nashville, Berrien County, Georgia. In 1946 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. During his service he was stationed in West Germany, where he met his bride Maria Magdalena Kanzler. They married in 1955. In 1967, he retired from the U.S. Air Force at the rank of Captain.
Following military retirement Wallace attended the University of Georgia and earned a baccalaureate degree in science in 1969. He then earned his doctorate from the Medical College of Georgia in 1972, and began his medical internship in Columbus Georgia. He served as Chief of the Medical Center Emergency Room physicians group from 1974 to 1984, then at Doctors Hospital Emergency Room until his retirement in 1994. During his years as an emergency room physician, he was member of several organizations, including American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Medical Association of Georgia, and the Muscogee County Medical Society. After his medical career, he enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, gardening, and traveling with his wife.
Wallace is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Arnold Griner, Jr. and Emory Hugh Griner. He is survived by his wife Maria, children Axel (Sherrie) Griner, Berndt (Barbara) Griner, and Bonnie (Michael) Whitt, grandchildren Gabrielle Griner and Connor Whitt, siblings Jerome (Melba) Griner, Earl (Gail) Griner, and Betty Jean (Johnny) Johnston.
Wallace's life will be celebrated in a memorial service; arrangements have not been finalized as of yet. In lieu of flowers, donations to Fisher House Foundation, Inc. (www.fisherhouse.org) or to Columbus Hospice (www.columbushospice.com) would be deeply appreciated.
