When I went back to hunting after a 10-year break, Bill, being Bill, took me on as his student. Because of Bill, I got to hunt in many places I would never have discovered and with many other hunters whom I might never have met. Bill knew the Fort Moore / Benning reservation better than anyone. He said once, "I have a hundred stands out here in various stages of deterioration!" I could say to him that I bet I'd found a place he had not ever been. He would say "Describe it to me." I'd answer with something relatively obscure but unique like a rusted culver with a hole in it shaped like an 8. Every single time, he knew where the place was.
But the best thing about Bill was not what he knew but how he used what he knew to help others, especially wounded warriors. For example, he was an instrumental in obtaining a hunting vehicle that he could use to carry them around as well as a stand that would allow them to roll on in a wheelchair and then the stand could be elevated so they could hunt as near normally as possible. The shooting compound that was built a few years ago was his passion project. He had to push for it and he designed it top to bottom to better serve soldiers and their families as well as other community members.
Bill was never not helping people. His legacy is his huge heart and the healing laughter he gave to everyone who enjoyed his stories.
RIP dear friend.

It is with a heavy heart and great memories that I write these condolences! I just learned of Bill's passing. I met him by chance when I called Fort Benning and asked about hog hunting. The person answering the phone on post said, I know just the guy you need to speak with. Although Bill had not been on active duty for a few years, he was a soldier forever. I called Bill and the next Saturday I was hog hunting with him. Bill was respected and loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. To all of the family and close friends, I am so sorry for your loss. Bill will never be forgotten. May God be with you and keep you in his arms.
