Carole Fish Obituary

Carole Fish

Peterborough NH — Carole A. (Whipple) Fish, 87, of Peterborough, NH died October 9, 2021 at the Scott-Farrar Retirement Community.

Carole was born July 2, 1934 in Oceanside, New York to Alfred P. and Marie Catherine (Christensen) Whipple. She grew up primarily in Ledyard, Connecticut and graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1951. Carole attended Willimantic Teachers College (now Eastern Connecticut State University) and graduated in 1955. While in college she met Calvin Fish (ECSU '54) of Hebron, Connecticut and they married on July 16, 1955 in Ledyard. Carole and Calvin taught for many years in the Manchester, Connecticut school system. Carole's passion for much of her career was teaching reading and ESL classes, especially to the Hmong community in Manchester. Carole and Calvin raised their family in Bolton and Coventry before retiring in 2003 to the family farm in the Gilead section of Hebron. In 2016 they moved to Scott-Farrar Retirement Community in Peterborough.

Throughout her life Carole was very active in the Congregational (UCC) and United Methodist churches. At age 15 she started playing the organ and singing in the choir at the Ledyard Congregational Church and enjoyed music throughout her life. She was the first woman Trustee of the Mansfield, CT United Methodist Church and served as the President of Church Women United (formerly United Methodist Women) of the New England Conference. She was selected as Connecticut State Grange Queen in 1950. She was a devoted member of her academic sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa. Since moving to Peterborough, Carole was a member of the Union Congregational Church. Carole and Calvin traveled extensively, enjoying cross-country camping with their family, cruises with family and friends, and mission study retreats.

Carole was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, Calvin D. Fish, sister Marilyn C. Newman, and brother Alfred P. Whipple, Jr. She is survived by her four children: Brian (Carol) of Omaha, Nebraska; David (Laura Gingras) of Peterborough, New Hampshire; Alan (Pamela) of Clifton Park, New York; Sheri (Scott) Taylor of Storrs, Connecticut; sisters Sandra (William) Stark of Canton, Ohio and Chriss (William) Glover of Knoxville, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service and inurnment will be planned for Spring of 2022 at the Gilead Cemetery in Hebron, CT.

Carole's family is grateful to the staff at Scott-Farrar for their loving care during the past 5 years.

I am very sorry to learn of the passing of Carole. I knew her when we both were teachers at Martin School. She was a very caring and positive colleague. My husband and I always enjoyed chatting with Carole and Cal at Martin School's social events. She helped many of my students who were learning the English language become more successful in school. She always spoke with love about her family. I am sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Carol and Calvin when our sons Sean and Alan went to nursery school together in Coventry Ct and we carpooled. You would be hard pressed to find nicer people.
