Herbert Gramm Obituary

Herbert Gramm

Tucson, AZ - Herbert Gramm, conservationist, passionate physician, and world traveler died on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona with his loving wife Colette at his side.

He was born in Germany on December 26,1932, the son of a German mother and an American father, he came to the United States at age 15, attending The Milne School in Albany, NY. Herb is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Tufts University School of Medicine, specializing in GI Radiology. He practiced radiology for 40 years at the New England Deaconess Hospital which after a merger became the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) simultaneously serving on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. In addition to his clinical duties his interest was mainly education- the Herbert Gramm Library at BIDMC was dedicated in his honor - serving as vice chair and residency program director.

He was elected President of the New England Roentgen Ray Society and the Norfolk District Medical Society. His focus on medical education permitted him to serve as visiting professor in Adelaide, Australia and Quito, Ecuador which along with participating in international professional meetings gave Herb and Colette opportunities to pursue world travel in over 80 countries. A member of many professional organizations, he especially enjoyed his 13 years as an examiner on the American Board of Radiology where he maintained his friendship with other colleagues interested in radiology education.

He and Colette lived in Cambridge, MA for 55 years and spent summers on Gilmore Pond in Jaffrey, NH. There they hiked, swam, boated, and explored the Monadnock Region thoroughly. Herb's interest in conservation was expressed in the donation of their Mountain Brook Reservoir Property to the Monadnock Conservancy and as one of the five donors of the Bradley Draper Memorial Forest to the New England Forestry Foundation.

In 2021, they retired to Tucson, Arizona. Herb Gramm served in the US Army Medical Corps as a captain for two years during the Berlin Crisis at the 98th General Hospital in Germany, a devoted American then and always.

Per his wishes, the services will be private and at the convenience of his family.
