Jacob Wolterbeek Obituary

RINDGE - Dr. Jacob C. Wolterbeek, 84, passed away at home peacefully Jan. 4, 2014, after a prolonged illness. Dr. Wolterbeek was a prominent physician and psychiatrist who

delivered countless babies as an obstetrician for the U.S. Army early

in his career. Later, he achieved local prominence as a clinical director and doctor on staff at hospitals in Massachusetts and New Hampshire; from Mass General to the Boston V.A. Hospital in the 1960s

and 70s. Most recently, he worked with the Cheshire Hospital in Keene.

In that city he was also the director for health services for Keene State College. Married in 1951, he served in the U.S. Army, rose to the rank of

captain, and served as an Army doctor at posts in the U.S. and Augsburg, Germany. Re-enlisting in the Army Reserves years later, he

retired after attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Dr. Wolterbeek served on the Planning and Zoning boards in Rindge,

where he raised his family and worked his farm since 1968. He is

survived by his wife, Georgia, sons Jake of Wells, Maine, Mark of

Rindge, Paul of Globe, Ariz., and Warren of Hampton, and daughter

Anneke of New Zealand. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Dr. Wolterbeek was preceded in death by his son Karel Anton Wolterbeek. Dr. Wolterbeek enjoyed working and improving his farmlands in Rindge, baling hay each summer to feed the farm's sheep, cows and goats. Dr. and Mrs. Wolterbeek support a variety of local charities including the Monadnock Humane Society and the Monadnock Conservancy land trust.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in the name of Dr.

Wolterbeek to each of these deserving organizations.

I was sad to hear the news of your Dad's passing Anna. I have fond memories of visiting your family, and the warm reception to join in on the farm activities. May you all have wonderful memories to help you through this time.

We have so many wonderful memories of staying at their farm — skiing, gathering eggs, seeing the animals, and trying our hand at spinning, weaving, and knitting. Your parents made a very special place that was unique in my and my sisters' experience and opened up whole new worlds to us, and your father was a major figure in those visits. In fact, my experiences at your family home during those years played a big part in what became my dreams of country living. Your dad clearly was a very accomplished person, and we appreciated learning more about his life and his legacy from the notice that you sent. Please know that you're very much in our thoughts and hearts during this sad time. Your friends,

...it is the end of a life of value, contributions and enjoyment, family and a beautiful country life. Remember Peter van der Kaaden's story of helping your father birth lambs, he loved doing it. I remember my visit to your home in Rindge some years ago and the tour of the farm and family stories. I believe as I drove away your father was in the top of the barn preparing to deal with stacking hay? Please accept my condolence and my respect for your father's contribution to others.

Everyone in our Curbstone office was saddened to learn of your father's passing. Your dad was a wonderful person, it is so sad to see such a brilliant man suffer with dementia. May your memories of him always be first in your mind. There is a way that such people stay with us forever. With Sympathy...

I was saddened to read of the passing of your father. Such a fine, inspirational man, serving in many different capacities, mankind, family, community and still the heart and soul of a farmer. So much to grieve for in his passing. Both David and I value that day we spent with you all at the farm in Rindge. Such fond memories held close in remembrance. We are also thinking of your Mother at this time, hoping that she is in good care and with a modicum of contentment.

We were very sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. He sounds like he was a wonderful man with a wonderful worthwhile life and what a beautiful piece was written on him: "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” (Thomas Campbell)
