Karen McDonough Obituary

PETERBOROUGH -- On July 4, 2018, longtime Peterborough resident, Karen Anne McDonough, died peacefully at Catholic Medical Center after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. Karen was born in Malden, Massachusetts and was the eldest of three children of John and Sheila McDonough. Her brother Michael predeceased her. She leaves her sister Mary of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Karen was an English teacher at Mascenic Regional High School for many years. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching and retired in 2016. She loved staying in touch with former students and learning about their lives after graduation. Karen received her BA in education from Keene State College and her Master's degree from Rivier University. Karen was involved in the National Educational Association of New Hampshire much of her teaching career. She served as NEA New Hampshire President from 1999 to 2007.

The greatest joy in Karen's life was spending time with her nieces Anna and Julia. She instilled in them a passion for learning, reading and travel, together they had many memorable adventures through the years and "spa" days were always Aunt Karen's fun and creative specialty.

Karen resided most recently at Friendship Manor Assisted Living Residence in New Ipswich. The care she received from the staff there was compassionate and empowering. She made many new friends and enjoyed sharing her passion for rooting for the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass which will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Divine Mercy Parish, 12 Church Street, Peterborough, with a reception to follow at Hilltop Golf Course.

In lieu of flowers contributions in Karen's memory can be made to Friendship Manor Activities Fund, 151 Main St, New Ipswich, NH 03071.
