Madeleine Brzozowski Obituary

Madeleine M. Brzozowski of Antrim died in her sleep January 20, 2013, at Good Shepherd Healthcare Center in Jaffrey, NH. She was born in Washington, DC on August 19, 1919, the daughter of Henry and Marie (Spehler) Hugele. As a child, Maddy attended presidential inaugurations and rolled Easter eggs on the White House lawn; she viewed President Taft's body lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda in 1930 and saw President Truman on his "constitutional" walks around the White House. One of Madeleine's fondest memories was shaking First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's hand when her high school graduating class visited the White House.
After graduation from Immaculate Conception High School, she worked at the Navy Yard in Washington.
On May 31, 1947, she married her husband of 54 years, John Brzozowski, in Washington, DC. Their first two children were born in Washington. They then moved to John's native New Hampshire, where he built the house in Antrim where they would raise their growing family.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was interested in the outdoors, travel, cooking, and sports, especially baseball. She was renowned for her chocolate chip cookies and her chiffon cakes. After her children left home, Maddy worked part-time at the James A Tuttle Library in Antrim. She was a member of the Antrim Historical Society, and of St Mary's Church in Hillsborough.
She is survived by her seven children, Robert and his wife Jane Bachman of Oneonta, NY; Stephen and his wife Jane of Goffstown, NH; Catherine and her husband James Freundlich of Portland, ME; Richard and his wife Janet of New Gloucester, ME, Ruth Richardson and her husband Fred of Weare, NH; Jeanne Barnes and her husband Jonathan of Essex, VT, and Margaret Boucher of Westbrook, ME; grandchildren Nathan Brzozowski, Elena Brzozowski, Sally Brzozowski, Kathleen Brzozowski, Kara Freundlich, Mia Freundlich, Joseph (Ashley) Brzozowski, Gabriel Brzozowski, Hannah Brzozowski, Anna (Daniel) Matloff, Timothy Richardson, Elizabeth Richardson, Jonathan Richardson, Cormick Barnes, Jordan Barnes, Daniel Barnes, Jacquee Boucher, and Julia Boucher; great-grandchildren Lillian Matloff and Levi Brzozowski; nieces and nephews in New Hampshire and Texas; cousins and the extended Hugele family; and her many dedicated caregivers, including her niece Roberta Reilly Hall and her dear friend Joyce Davison.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband John, and her brother John.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Saturday January 26 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Hillsborough.
Memorial contributions may be made to the James A Tuttle Library in Antrim or to the Antrim Historical Society.

Mrs. Brzozowski was a treasure for those that knew her, and who also shared her treasures, that being her great family. May all of the sadness be set aside by the great memories, and the more still to come. Hugs to you all.

I have so many wonderful memories of Mrs. Brzozowski and her family. I will always remember the "safe" parties they hosted at their home after high school basketball games. Lots of fellowship, food, games and laughter. (And I will never forget the chocolate "poodles" she made, and looked forward to having at her house and at high school/Latin Club bake sales!)

May God bless and comfort you, her dear children, grandchildren and friends as you grieve your loss. But may we all appreciate the wonderful legacy she has left with her life so lovingly, sacrificially and fully lived.

Maddy and my Mom (Cecelia Smith) were the best of friends and loved seeing each other's families grow. I think my Mom was her connection back to Washington D.C. I loved coming to New Hampshire for a summer vacation both at the house and the lake. I think Maddy would always make sure that Ski would get more sand brought into the shoreline of the lake whenever we were there in the summer. I have so many fond memories of my family's visits with Maddy and her family. Just wanted to offer our prayers and condolences for Maddy and her family. Love, Tim and Barbara Smith
