Robert Fischer Obituary

PETERBOROUGH- Robert A. Fischer, Jr., 88 died on August 19 at Summerhill Assisted Living, Peterborough, NH, after a period of failing health. He was born in Stamford, Connecticut, on June 17, 1927, the son of Robert A. Fischer and Mary M. (Bosilevas) Fischer.

Bob was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a Rawin-Sonde Operator in Cold Bay, Alaska during World War II. He boxed while in the service, reaching the final stages of the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. Following his military service, he boxed professionally and was named "Prospect-of-the-Month" by Ring Magazine.

Bob went on to earn a B.A. and PhD from the University of Connecticut, and a M.S. from Columbia Teachers' College. He married Loraine Canfield in 1951, the same year he began his teaching career. He taught in Waterford and Greenwich, CT.

Throughout his life, Bob was an avid reader and recorded the titles of books he read in numerous notebooks.

Upon retirement in 1983, he and his wife, Loraine, moved to New Hampton, NH, where they had a small farm. He was active in town politics, serving as Selectman and on the Conservation Commission. He was also a founding member Pemigewasett River Council as well as of the Starr King Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Plymouth, NH. In 2005, he and his wife moved to Peterborough to live near their daughter, Anne.

Besides his wife he is survived by, daughter Lynne Fischer Yash of Cincinnati, OH, son A. Robert Fischer of Austin, TX, daughter Anne Fischer of Sharon, NH, sister Betty Henrickson of Rockford, IL, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

His body was donated to Dartmouth Medical School. At his request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Hampton Nature-Fitness Trail, New Hampton Town Office, 6 Pinnacle Hill Rd, New Hampton NH 03256 or Veteran's for Peace, 1404 North Broadway, Saint Louis, MO 63102

Anne, So sorry to hear. I remember you dad (and mom!) and I think he may have spent time at IA with my dad Lou. Lovely obituary. Sounds like a life well lived.

I well remember your husband /father with pleasure.
He was concerned with ever increasing world population and was helpful in getting an IA petition signed.
His is the intelligence and farsightedness which may sustain our world.

I didn't know Mr. Fischer but remember his son Rob. Rob I remember you liked the Cowboys and I was a Giants fan. We had some fun times with that, as the Cowboys were good and the Giants weren't. We lost track after that but a neighbor in Havemeyer Park posted this link and remembered your father. My condolences to you and your family.
