Steve Sherman Obituary

Steve Sherman

Peterborough, NH - Prolific writer, journalist, photographer, painter, musician, nature lover, and gentleman, Stephen Barry Sherman, 85, passed away on January 7, 2024, in Peterborough, down the road from Hancock, the place he called home.

Son of Genevieve & Gene Sherman, Steve was born on July 26, 1938 and raised in the Los Angeles, area. He shared a passion for words and stories with his father, a Los Angeles Times Pulitzer-prize-winning journalist. Steve wrote both fiction and non-fiction books - cookbooks, hiking guides, mysteries, adventure tales, and biographies, as well as thousands of newspaper and magazine articles.

Steve is survived by his brother, Glen of Colorado, nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends.

In the early '70s he began hankering to see, in his words, "Thoreau and Emerson country," and was accepted for a residency at the MacDowell Colony, where he met fellow writer and musician, Julia Older.

At the end of their residencies, Steve proposed the two of them hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine and write about their adventures - a "bliss-and-blister" honeymoon of 2,119 miles. Their love, partnership and creative bond lasted until Julia's death in 2021. Their books, many written collaboratively, are a testament to their shared interests and fierce curiosity in art, nature, literature, poetry, cooking, New England, and more.

Steve's intellect, gentle good humor, warmth and charm made him a favorite with all who knew him. His love of ice cream was also legendary. Please join all who knew and loved him in eating a bowl in his honor.
