"Captain Moe" R. James Moses Jr. (Jamie)

May 5, 1972-April 6, 2023

Capt. Moe passed away just 40 hours after his Queen Nana Margie. We, his family have been in shock, devastated & heartbroken however, we take great comfort in knowing that they are together. Moe was born and raised in Gloucester, MA. He was a devoted son and grandson and took great pride in being a big brother to his sister Renee, they were known as the "Dynamic Duo". The thing that Moe was most proud of was being known as was the fun, loving, life of the party, best gift giver, crazy UNCLE MOE! At a young age he loved money and never had a hard time earning it with paper routes, collecting cans, dishwashing at Cameron's and many other side jobs. He graduated in 1990 from the Electrical program at GHS. This trade had come in handy throughout his life.

He channeled his energy, enthusiasm and passion for all things nautical; after graduating from Gloucester High School, he embarked on a lifelong career on the water. Moe's "Bamps" (Richard Cusick, Sr.) was a lumper on the Gloucester docks, so his exposure to fishing and boating was ingrained from an early age. When Captain Moe would come back to his hometown he enjoyed heading out on the water on Daddy Jacks Lobster Boat, The Tin Lizzy and staying true to his roots.

It was Moe's Uncle Brian who took him under his wing and taught him what he needed to know to get started on his first commercial fishing vessel, "The Kimberly." That experience took him from Gloucester to Haiti in the early 90's. Moe and his best friend from kindergarten, Tim "Zeke" Randazza moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1991 and never looked back.

After a few years of working in the world of sword fishing, Moe set his sights on yachts. He turned to Zeke one day and said, "I'd rather be washing one of those than dealing with this BS." Moe worked with his cousin Todd at Erwin Marine Services as a yacht reconditioning specialist and did boat maintenance prior to landing a job as a deckhand for the founder of McDonald's widow, Mrs. Crock. Moe worked hard, took classes and earned his captain's license. He went from deckhand to First Officer of the "Impromptu". Moe made the Big move to be the Captain on the "Rednaissance". He became Captain at the young age of 23. He spent 13 years on that vessel, which was renamed "Red Baron" and then "Freedom." He was the first captain to bring the largest yacht through his hometown Blynman Bridge under open navigation, with a crew he recruited from his hometown and all of his family on board. Moe and Zeke were an inseparable team, and eventually scraped together enough money to buy a house on the canal on Bimini Lane in Ft. Lauderdale. Anyone that knows Moe probably has a Moe Show story to tell from a visit to Bimini Lane. Moe ended up bringing along & mentoring his little cousin Shaun Koper. He taught Shaun just as his uncle Brian did for him. He spent years on the ocean as Captain of many other boats such as "Stop the Press," and "Sea Delight". Moe worked in the yachting industry over 30 years and loved being hands-on, he started his own business "Moementem Marine" doing charters, deliveries, engineering and overseeing structural projects.

Moe had a gift for asserting authority, giving direction, and improving the skills of his crew while never losing his sense of humor. He could make a show out of demonstrating how to get eye level with every surface on the interior of a yacht and attacking every square centimeter of dust as if his life depended on it. Moe could be described as a hard-working, relentless perfectionist, but his process was rational and his expectations high. When socializing off hours, he could bring any group together with stories and antics that had everyone nearly wetting themselves with laughter. He had a huge heart, and an unfaltering loyalty to friends and family. He would give anyone the shirt off his back and take time to get to know them for who they were. He could hold a straight face while telling the most outlandish tales of life on the water, or any crazy adventure for that matter.

He also enjoyed Riding his Harley with his buddies, brother-in-law, Bobby and father Moe. He even brought that bike on Yachts to the Caribbean Islands. He had a Love for the wind in his face! It made him feel FREE!

Moe is survived by his parents John & "Ma Moe" Janelle McCarthy, Russell (Moe) Moses, Sr. & his wife Ilia. His sister Renee (Moses) Mitchell and her husband Bobby. His nephews Zachery and Colby Mitchell, nieces Abbey Mitchell and Nichole (Mitchell) Fullerton and husband Brendan, his great nephews Drew, Alex & Connor. Moe had an amazing Family bond with all his Cusick Uncles (Rick, Pat, Brian & Jack) & his cousins Ricky Cusick, Shaun Koper, Todd & Max Erwin. He had a soft spot for his Auntie Polly. He was survived by many loving cousins. He was predeceased by all his grandparents and his favorite Uncle Bob.

Moe had a special companion - his cat BABY GIRL (who will reside home on Bimini Lane with The Kansas Cowboy).

His legacy will live on, and he will be remembered for his knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to pursuing his passion from a young age and achieving a great many things along the way.

I'm stunned, I was trying to call Moe last week.
A friend from Ft L gave me the news today.
I met Capt. Moe when he was on the Red Baron and then Freedom in Annapolis. After working for him we became great friends, he joined me in South Dakota for some awesome moe- tacycle !! riding. I would never pass thru south Fla. without meeting up for a few beers.
My condolences to the family.
I will miss my friend
