Canton � Robert Aaron Mathews, Sr., age 29, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2011. A native of Haywood County, he was a son of Tim and Karon Robinson Mathews. Aaron was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Marvin and Mavis Mathews and maternal grandfather, Dale Robinson. The center focus of Aaron's life was his son. He was a national champion in SAMBO wrestling and also earned several state titles in freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling as wells as All-American Honors. He loved basketball, NC State football, and was also a member of Boy Scouts of America. Aaron was a member of Pinnacle Church and also served in the United States Army Reserves. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Robert Aaron Mathews, Jr. of Canton; his loving sister, Andrea Mathews of Greenville, NC; his maternal grandmother, Annette Robinson of Canton; maternal grandfather, Roger Anderson and his wife, Barbara, of Canton; two special brothers, Bryan Hill of Canton and Christyeon Jones of Charlotte; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Pinnacle Church with the Reverend Heath Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Bryan Hill, Christyeon Jones, Craig Surrett, Adam Bridges, Zeb Smathers, Brian Pace, Austin Thompson, Duke Sawyer, Luke Earley, Pat Jones, and Treagon Messer. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Memorials may be made to Robert Aaron Mathews, Jr. Scholarship Fund, 24 Reed Street, Canton, NC 28716 or to Pinnacle Church, 101 Fiberville Road, Canton, NC 28716.
