ADAM ALBRIGHT Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 2, 2023.
ALBRIGHT--Adam Medill. Adam Medill Albright died February 25th, 2023, a cruel Parkinson's took him. He kept his humor and positive spirit to the end. Adam was born on August 1st, 1947 to Josephine Patterson Albright and Ivan Albright. He loved his older siblings Joe Albright and Alice Arlen, and younger sister Dinah Rojek. His family moved to Woodstock, VT when he was 13. They spent summers in Wyoming where Adam roamed free and deepened his love of nature. He graduated from Brown University. He embraced self learning - reading, talking with people and most of all doing; starting with the basics and working his way to the complex. On January 19th, 1974, Adam married Rachel Iverson Albright. Theirs was a dynamic, active, loving marriage. They had three precious children, Mika, Reed and Garrett. Dear grandchildren arrived; Finley and Avery - sons born to Mika; Odin and Miyumi, son and daughter born to Reed and Shinobu. In early life, Adam could be found on skis, skates, packing into the wild, fishing (he tied his own flies), hitchhiking cross country, living on a Sausalito houseboat, building a log cabin, painting and sculpting. Adam and wife Rachel had great enthusiasm for trekking, hiking, skiing; and over the years visited many cultures and faraway places - children in tow when they were young. Adam went from artist to farmer to en- trepreneur-investor, though his biggest passion was the environment. He threw his considerable energies into working with many environmental groups, always pushing to nurture and further their success. A Giant Redwood has fallen. Adam will be missed.

I was sorry to learn that Adam had passed. He was kind, helpful, and encouraging to me in my research and writing about his father, the artist Ivan Albright. I did not get to know Adam very well, but in the several times over the past two+ decades that I reached out about a question or feedback, he was direct and I always appreciated his response and candor. I send my good wishes for the Albright family.

I had the pleasure of knowing Adam at the Latin School of Chicago, The Hill School, Brown University (where we were in the same fraternity together) and then back in Chicago after college. He was a dear friend who kindly invited me numerous times to his parents’ house during college, where we would ski together. Unfortunately, our contact was broken when I moved to Brussels for work in 1974.

Adam was inevitably affable, fun, generous and socially conscious. Over the years I have thought of him many times and always meant to reconnect, but Chicago and Bend are far apart, so regretfully it never happened.

My best wishes go out to his family and friends who knew and loved him. I know he will be deeply missed, and I will continue to remember the many good times we had together. They always bring a smile to my face.

Adam and I were good friends at The Hill, but reconnected in the summer of 1971 when we attempted to build a log cabin on the side of a recently purchased piece of property in Braintree, Vermont. Don't look for the cabin. We did, however, get very proficient at felling trees, stripping them of their bark and curing them. Very fond memories. Adam was wary of his impending financial windfall. He was always well-centered and I loved him for that. Neither of us knew the Lord back then. I hope he found Him. I look forward to reconnecting with him in heaven.

I´ll remember Adam for his introspective, kind, and thoughtful presence in his family, who was a second family to me during an important part of growing up. I am thinking of this great family as you mourn the loss of husband, father, grandfather while celebrating his richly textured life, and all he gave to family and community. As time has opened more of the world to me, I think of him worrying and working to preserve our natural world: my first example, perhaps, of such a large and important mission. Thank you Adam for dedicating your life to that.
