Adele Dykes Dyer

A resident of Amite, she passed away at 11:05AM on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Hammond. She was born December 30, 1919 in Amite and was 94 years of age. She was a 1942 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University in Elementary Education. After graduating, she joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) where she served her country in Africa and Italy during World War II. After marrying James H. Dyer, Sr., she worked briefly in Ft. Smith, AR as a school teacher. She moved back to Amite in 1947 where she and her husband started Amite Livestock Company in 1950 and continued until retirement in 1996. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Survived by daughter, Vera Durr and husband, Emile, Amite; 2 sons, James H. Dyer, Jr., Amite and John Patrick Dyer and wife, Victoria, Hammond; 7 grandchildren, Victoria Durr, Errol Durr and wife, Michelle, Susan Denise Stewart and husband, Blake, Katie Jennifer Thomas and husband, Dustin, Kaitlin Jessica Simpson and husband, Brian, Mallory Olivia and Tyler Olivia; 8 great grandchildren, Austin Durr, Michael Durr, Shelby Lynn Durr, Ashby Reeves, Blake Stewart, Aley Blake Stewart, Laiken Kaine Thomas and Lexon Kait Thomas; sister, Margaret Ann Gill, Amite. Preceded in death by husband, James H. Dyer, Sr.; 2 daughters in law, Kathy McDaniel Dyer and Beverly Sue Hurst Dyer; 2 sisters, Alma Eichel and Vera Schwebel and a grandson, David James Durr. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 9AM until 11:40AM on Friday, May 9, 2014. Religious Services will be at St. Helena Catholic Church, Amite, at 12 Noon on Friday.
