HAMPTON, VA - Ailene Nancy Rawls Baltes, of Hampton died October 14, 2015 in Dover Delaware. Born on June 11, 1925 in Elizabeth City County (Newport News) to Tellie Wise Rawls and Margaret Allen Rawls. She was predeceased by her husband of 21 years, William John Baltes, their infant son Nicholas John Baltes and her brother Edward Allen Rawls. Nancy was a graduate of Chuckatuck High School in Suffolk, VA. She obtained her RN under the Nurses Cadet Corp program during WWII at Elizabeth Buxton Hospital Nursing School in Newport News. After the death of her husband in 1973 she continued to run two small businesses they had begun. She later returned to the nursing profession at Mary Immaculate Hospital and retired in 1990. While at the hospital she was involved in their grief counseling program for parents who lost a child. Nancy was an active member of Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church for 62 years. She volunteered her time and talents to many programs. She was a Stephens Minister, UMW member, Nelms Class member; Youth Group leader in the 1960's and was typically present at the Church sponsored Red Cross blood drives. Her energy and kindness was God's gift. She was a member of the Elizabeth Buxton Nursing Alumni Association, a past member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Chestnut Red Hatters. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed nature's beauty along with cooking and drawing. Nancy moved from Hampton and relocated to Westminster Village in Dover, DE. There she continued to enjoy life and volunteer as a marketing ambassador. Survived by her daughters Tellie B. Dixon and husband George, of St. Michaels, MD and Hazel B. Shinholt and husband Robert of Milford, DE. Two grandchildren Matthew and Grace Shinholt and Great-Grandson Isaac Shinholt. Also survived by her niece Cynthia R. Bess and husband Phil; Nephews Edward A. Rawls and wife Sue; John S. Rawls and wife Mary Sue; Timothy W. Rawls and wife Darlene. A celebration of her life will be held at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, 1024 Harpersville Road, Newport News on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015 at 11:15 AM followed by a luncheon. Friends may join the family for visitation from 4-6 PM on Friday, Nov. 6 at the Church. Burial will be private. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Delaware Hospice and in particular Kelly Longo, RN. Donations can be made to Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church and should be directed to the Music and Youth Programs.
