Dr.Datta was my professor at UNLV and offered me a chance to show my potential with a supervised independent study. He paved the way for my PhD research and allowed me to find a niche within Computer Science that I love. He will be missed.

I always remember him as my good professor. I took few courses with him during 2000. I found out about his death through a friend and was deeply saddened. My heart goes out to him at this time of grief. He was truly an inspiring professor, mentor. I could learn teaching and research skills
under his supervision after he awarded me grad assistant and teaching jobs. He was the first one to congratulate me on my first job after graduation in those struggling economy days soon after September 11 2001. May his soul rest in peace and his memories live in hearts of countless students like me.

Just got this bad news. He was my schoolmate and also classmate for a few months in JU before I left Engineering to join Medical School. RIP my friend.

I just found out about Dr. Datta's passing and am quite saddened by the news. I would put him with the top instructors anywhere, of all time. His teaching style involved showmanship. His class was this wild psychological experience designed to shock the students into being open-minded to what would normally be very dry material. He had an insane grading system where each homework assignment was worth a small number of points, but each test question was worth thousands of points. Then, at the end, those who slacked on the homework due to their low point yield learned they had good reason to be at least a little nervous about their overall grade. These examples are evidence of an instructor who put all of himself into his work, and are a reflection to his dedication to making sure each and every student comes out knowing more about the material and discipline in general. The academic community lost a good one - he will be missed.

Dr. Ajoy Kumar Datta was my batch mate in the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Jadavpur University, India from 1972 to 1979. We spent a very good time during our student days. During Masters course we had several discussions both academic and social issues at the Jadavpur Coffee House. This news is really shocking to me. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Heartfelt condolence to Madhumia and Tatini.

Ajay was the closest classmate in Jadavpur. My memories of Ajay are still a reserved and pure at heart boy. We developed friendship in last two years of engineering and I visited his home several times. He had very caring parents. May his soul Rest In Peace.

Ajoy was a great professor and a great man, and it was my pleasure to have known him. He was passionate to stimulate our research community. When he came to a labo in Japan, he actively talked to young members including me to promote their skills. So later I visited UNLV and worked with him for two months. I enjoyed the stay since he and his wife kindly hosted me. This experience greatly motivated me to work as a researcher in this community. I appreciate everything he's done for me.

Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Dr. Datta was an inspiration. He believed in his students and our ability to succeed. He held us to a high standard, but was always receptive to receiving questions and giving advice. He was open, honest, intelligent, and maybe most importantly, he was very kind.

Dr. Datta was passionate about his classes and about teaching. I feel lucky to have been able to learn from him before he passed. He was a good man, and one of the best professors I've ever had. Rest in peace.

It was an honor to know and learn from Dr. Datta. My group called him the Wizard of OS. You could not help but notice how Dr. Datta genuinely wanted to teach. You could not help but be inspired by his enthusiasm for teaching you.

When I took Distributed Computing from Dr. Datta, he said students always ask if there would be programming assignments and his answer is that Distributed Computing is already an application.

I'll always remember how kind and understanding Dr. Datta was, starting with the very first class I took with him during the summer after high school in '96. When I slept in on exam day and showed up very late, he gave me extra time to finish the test after the official period had ended. Years later when my schedule didn't allow me to finish a graduate class with him, he let me suspend it and later finish it remotely, grading me by simply asking about the content over the phone.

He was a great professor and a great person, a rare combination.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Datta's family.
Dr. Datta have always put the education of his students before him.
It was never lost on me that he was very strict for our own good, and that he expected only the best from us. Not once did he allow us to miss an opportunity to teach. After some of our classes, he would hide nuggets of life lessons while meticulously discussed CPU schedulers.
He had a sense of humor (and also a good sense of fashion, which we all noticed). When I visited him during office hours, despite his busy schedule he made it a point to listen to my questions and treated me like a human being and asked about what I wanted for my future and encouraged me to be the leader he knew I could be.
For his mentorship and friendship, I am forever grateful. Our University will never be the same without him.
I want to thank Dr. Datta's family for sharing such a great man with all of us. I know he must have worked long hours and spent more time at school than home. I want to reassure you his passion for teaching created a new generation educators, engineers and leaders we are part of his legacy.
