Alan Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 19 to May 20, 2012.
Brown, Alan S. CHARLTON Alan Simon Brown, M.D. died at his residence in Charlton on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at the age of 60. A retired doctor of radiology, he later turned to a passion for home design, "hobby farming" and master gardening and was committed to helping people and humane treatment of animals. Born in Schenectady, he was the son of Edwin and Judith (Simon) Brown. Alan was a graduate of Linton High School and completed his undergraduate degree at Clark University. Alan then went on to Brown University Medical School and did his residency at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City and a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He practiced medicine for many years in Massachusetts and invented and held patents for medical devices. Alan's brilliance was multi-faceted, as one of his closest friends would say, he was a "Renaissance Man." Beyond his medical career and scientific interests, he had a stewardship of land he owned and cherished, he was an athlete, played several musical instruments and was an creative illustrator. Alan always took the time to really know his friends and if anyone had medical or personal issues to discuss, he was a consummate listener. He helped people with their concerns, facilitating good solutions. Alan leaves his mother Judy Brown; three brothers, David (Joan) Brown of Niskayuna, Steven (Patty) Brown of Loudonville and Jeffrey (Jessica) Brown of Atlanta; a sister, Marci (Anthony) Jackson of Longmeadow, Mass. and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves his loving companion Carol Miriam Wolff; close friends, Linda Guinipero, Darren and Renae Herbinger, Terry Searson Sr. and many others. He will be missed by all. To honor his life a graveside service will be held at 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Beth Shalom Cemetery, Schermerhorm Street, Rotterdam. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Glen Highland Farm, 217 Pegg Road, Morris, NY 13808, or Doctors Without Borders, 333 7th Ave., New York, NY 10001-5004. Alan was a multi-faceted man with interests ranging from his beloved dogs to classical music. He loved riding his tractor around his farm and planting huge vegetable crops in the summer. He was a farmer-gentleman in the true English tradition. May he rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear of Alan's death. His photographs, his kindness, his willingness to connect, and his willingness to help others, even at great cost to himself, will be remembered.
