Alan Fry Obituary

Published by Naperville Sun from May 5 to May 7, 2023.
John Alan Fry went home to be with his Lord and his loving parents and brother on Sunday, April 30, 2023 in Naperville. He was born on May 31, 1947 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Alan was raised in Naperville, graduating from Naperville High School. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas State University. At Kansas State he discovered two passions that would sustain him throughout his life. He met his wife of 53 years, Nancy, and discovered a talent for choral singing. He sang in the Naperville Community Chorus, Naperville Men's Glee Club, and Knox Presbyterian church choir.

Alan would often say that his greatest accomplishment was his flourishing family who spread from Seattle to Kansas to Atlanta. He loved to garden with beautiful flower beds spread throughout the 5 acres where he and Nancy raised their family. When he wasn't in the garden, he could be found in the kitchen cooking meals or grilling on the patio to entertain his many friends.

Alan was very proud of his accomplishments as the first chairman of the Indian Prairie Educational Foundation which has championed fine arts in School District 204 since its inception, chairman of the Corporate Board of the Naperville YMCA and as a board member of Harris Bank.

Alan was also proud when his leadership efforts, as well as the contributions of the rest of the Fry Family, were recognized in the Naperville community by the naming of the Fry Family YMCA and the Fry Elementary School in their honor.

Alan's professional career focused on land development of subdivisions in south Naperville and Plainfield such as Tamarack Golf Club, Walker's Grove, Wilding Pointe, Sutton Place, and many others. Alan succeeded his father as CEO of John Fry Realtor before transitioning the company to Fry Properties and J.G. Rock which he led with his brothers Larry and Gordon Fry.

Alan is survived by his wife, Nancy, children, John Andrew (Ember) Fry, Erin (Ed) Fogarty, and Adam (Allison) Fry, six grandchildren, and brother Gordon (Debbie). Preceding Alan in death were his parents John and Laurabelle (nee Wileden) Fry and his brother Larry (Mary Lou) Fry.

The family will be forever grateful to the dozens of friends and family who have supported and loved Alan and Nancy through this difficult time.

A visitation will be held at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home South Naperville location on Thursday, May 11 from 1 to 4 PM. A memorial service for Alan will be held on Friday, May 12 at 1 PM at Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Indian Prairie Educational Foundation or Knox Presbyterian Church.

Alan was probably my first friend from back on north Eagle street. We ran back and forth between yards playing cowboy and cowgirl. We roller skated. We swam in the pool in our backyard. Alan and family brought us to vacation bible school.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about Al's passing. We practically grew up together back in the 50s. We lived only one door down from each other and were always playing at one or the other's houses. We were part of the North Eagle St. gang where other of our classmates have come and gone. But as we grow older, we go off to college, move away, start careers and families, and unfortunately some of us drift apart and don't stay in touch. Al was a great guy and I'll never forget our wonderful childhood together. May he rest in peace.

Alan and Nancy were my confirmation teachers in 8th grade - an important part of my faith journey. May God comfort the Fry family during this tender time.

It is a blessing to have known Alan and his wonderful family and through Knox church, WVHS, and the community. Alan and Nancy`s children attended Waubonsie Valley high school and like Alan shared their talents with the school family. Adam, Erin, and Andy contributed to the fun I had as their principal. Alan and Nancy were always front and center contributors to WVHS and Indian Prairie school district. One of his greatest accomplishments was starting and chairing the Indian Prairie Education Foundation where he was a true champion of the arts of all types for children of all ages. He led a full and productive life as a businessman and church leader. Alan, I learned a lot from being around you. Thank you for your many gifts. Beth and I will truly miss you.

Alan will be missed. He came into my life around the time of my father's death. He was surrogate father, at times big brother. And more importantly, he became a friend. He and his family did so much for me that I can never repay.Be at peace now.
