Alan William Layton 1917 ~ 2009 Alan William Layton, 91, husband, father, builder, and Church servant, passed away quietly November 8, 2009 after a short illness. He was born to George Christopher Layton and Annie Louisa Secrist Layton, December 29, 1917 in Oakley, Idaho. Raised in Kaysville, he graduated from Davis High School in 1936. He attended the University of Utah from 1937-1941, studying Civil Engineering. He was also a member of Beta Theta Pi. In May, 1941, he was commissioned an officer in the United States Army. Following basic training, he was chosen to instruct field artillery at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, thereafter assigned as Battery Commander, 770th Field Artillery Battalion in Europe, landing on Utah Beach. After fighting their way across France, he led his unit through the chaos of the Battle of Bulge. He was seriously injured Feb., 1945, just inside Germany. He married Mona Snelgrove on September 9, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple and they are the parents of 10 children: Judith Kay Richins (Ross), Margaret Cardall (Duane), Alan Snelgrove Layton (Leslie), Marilyn Hendrickson (Art), Joanne (deceased), Janet Hilton (Matthew), Mona Davis (Kelly), Mark Snelgrove Layton (Leesa), Marianne Marlor (Brad), David Snelgrove Layton (Julie). He was proud to announce his blood type was "B+", an attitude that carried him to achieve much in his life. He started Layton Construction Company in the winter of 1953 with two employees. By virtue of his confidence and creative leadership, the company built numerous commercial, educational, and religious structures including the Jordan River Temple which was the crowning experience of his career. His community service included the Great Salt Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America, and the Associated General Contractors. He was pleased to serve on the University of Utah-College of Engineering National Advisory Board. The University also recognized him with their Distinguished Alumnus Award, later a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of Engineering and three years later, in 1999, the University awarded him an honorary Masters of Civil Engineering degree. He and his beloved companion served three missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; Director of the Oakland Temple Visitors Center, an Inner City Mission in the Liberty 8th Ward, and at Historic Temple Square. As a member of the high council of both the Wilford and Valley View Stakes, he was responsible for the operation of the welfare farm which he loved. For decades, he grew a large vegetable garden at his home, finding great joy sharing the harvest each season. He was preceded in death by his parents, his eight siblings, a daughter and two grandsons, Jonathan Dee and Brian Cardall. Funeral services will be held, Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Valley View Stake Center, 2245 East 3900 South. A viewing for friends and family will be held Friday, November 13th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Stake Center and from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30, prior to the services. Dear Sister Layton and Family,

As the youngest daughter of Henry and Grace Ann Nygaard, My sisters and I have been touched by many wonderful families. The Layton family is one of them. We were all so saddened by the passing of this great man and also the recent loss of Brian. We have gone down memory lane and have many wonderful memories with your family in it. I will never forget seeing Alan in the Salt Lake Temple not too long ago and his joy in telling me about the building of the Jordon River Temple. I found my first tithing slip for $1.60 to go towards the building of that temple. I loved taking piano from Janet and always enjoying driving by and looking at your beautiful yard. I still do drive bys in the neighborhood and would love to move back to my childhood neighborhood. We were all so blessed and are better people by who we associated with. And we will see Alan one day again and go down memory lane, Like our family often does. My parents have such a love for the Laytons and were so sorry to not be able to come down to Salt Lake. Gretchen and Mark Durham have moved back and are living at my parents. My dad had a fall in Vermont in a hotel over conference weekend and has a hard time standing for very long. We Love You All so much and know of the positive influence you have had on our family. We Thank you and remember you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.
Much Love, Julie Nygaard Johnston

Dear Mona and family,
We are so sorry for your loss and the loss that all of us in community feel at Alan's passing. My memories go back to the time when the stake park was being built and the leadership that was shown in it's planning and completion. Over the years we have watched from a far as your husband and father led out in areas that effected the stake, the Boy Scouts and the community. We would see him in the temple as a sealer. What an example he has been to all in our community. WSe know that he is busy with his new assignments in the spirit world and will be waiting to embrace all of you at the right time.
Love Doug and Cheryl Fisher.

Dear Layton Family,

My family and I wish to express our heartfelt sympathies for the passing of Alan Layton. In my time as an employee of Layton Construction I did not have the opportunity to meet Alan in person, however I have witnessed his legacy of integrity through his sons and the great organization that he founded so many years ago. Layton Construction is not just a place of employment.......it embodies the values of honest, hard work and provides a venue for personal development and achievement. His presence will continue to touch and influence peoples lives in this way indefinitely!

Dear Alan William Layton Family,

We join you in you sorrow at the passing of your dear father, Alan William Layton. We pray for your comfort in his departure and are assured that you will all reunite in love as a family. The resurrection is certain and his love for you is eternal. His exemplary life remains as a blessing and a guide. I am grateful for the association I have had with him over the years. His kindness will always be remembered.

Alan, you and Leslie are great examples for us. Bonnie and I are thankful for the many kindnesses you have extended to us and are pleased at the service you continue to render to the Lord as you lead the work at the Oquirrh Mountain Temple.

May the Spirit of the Lord bless you all with the peace that "passeth all understanding."

With Love,

Alan Layton, to me was always an outstanding example of professional integrity, honesty and devoted service in the Church. In the Valley View Stake he was an inspired leader of many useful endeavors. At the Salt Lake Temple, we often chatted in the locker room, when we both served as Sealers.
Most noteworthy is when as an architect he had bid on a school project and was the low bidder. The Nebo School Board decided that they could afford and would accept another bidder who had bid an alternate that made them slightly lower. Alan, gracefully withdrew the bid of Layton Construction to help a fellow Stake Member. He was a true Christian gentleman.

Roy Richards Silver.

May the Lord always bless Mona and his family!

Dear Family:

I want to express my sincere feelings of love for Alan. As I served with him in the Stake Mission Presidency I came to respect and honor a true servant of the Lord, whose only desire was to see that His work was carried out to the best of our abilities. May you find peace and contentment in knowing that Alan continues to serve the Lord.

Bother Layton was a close friend to my father, Ned Winder. A number of years ago he came out to the farm to get some compost. I jumped on the tractor and loaded the compost into his pickup truck. He said, "Kent, this compost is like the Gospel, it doesn't do any good unless you spread it around." :) He was a great man and raised a good family. He will be missed.

We just learned of Uncle Alan's passing. I have a lot of memories. He hired me to work for his company while I was going to school. He held the Layton camp outs for many years. My first memory as a very young child was going with my parents to Alan and Mona's wedding reception. Then there were the family picnics and so many other memories. He will receive many rewards for how he has lived.

Uncle Alan will always have a special place in my heart. My husband and I were so honored to have him seal us as eternal partners in the Salt Lake Temple 7 years ago next month. I have always looked up to him and looked forward to seeing his wonderful smile and glint in his eye. I know that my Dad looked up to him as well along with the rest of our family. I feel honored to be part of such a great family.

Dear Layton Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. What a joy it is to be friends with you. Brother and Sis Layton were always kind to the Snow family. We have learned from your examples and thank you both for the love shown to our family through the years we lived in the neighborhood. May you know how much we love you and your family. Few will ever know the depth of this mans character and his charity to our community. We celebrate his life and legacy which forges on in the lives of his remarkable spouse and uncommon but choice children. Farewell to a champion and builder of the common man who will work side by side and not expect anymore than he is will to give.
