The term "gentleman and a scholar" was surely intended for Alan MacNab. He is without a doubt one of life's kindest, nicest individuals. He was a great teacher and a great man. He made a great difference in this world. I am sure that right about now he is having a lengthy chat with his favorite author, Ernest Hemingway. My deepest sympathies to the MacNab family.

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."
-- Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965)
Mr. MacNab (Alan) was one of those rare sparks who brightly lit the world for hundreds of students.
We are so very thankful for our time spent under his tutelage at SCHS.

I'm so sorry for your loss. In the first few months of being in Mr. MacNab's class he brought me from intensely disliking English class to loving it. He was exceptionally gifted in his ability to inspire enjoyment of language, and I was tremendously lucky to have him as my teacher.

Mr. MacNab had a huge impact in my life. When he was on duty in the caf. I use to skip class just to go talk with him. He had me believe in myself and I am so grateful to have known him. Over the last 20 years I would chat with him over the phone when traveling through Ottawa and I will miss him deeply. The wind beneath my wings.

To the MacNab family
So sorry to hear of the passing of such a wonderful man.
Please know what a profound impact he had on so many students at South Carleton.
He was in my opinion, really the best teacher that school had during my time there.
If only all teachers could have his gift. He will be sadly missed by all his students over his 35 years.

The sadness of our loss might only be outweighed by our joy for the gift that his life has been to us. Mr. MacNab worked to make us comfortable in each class, and generally having done so would bring everyone along through the day's lesson. He led a class with inspiration. I am confident that he lives on in so many of his students regardless of our level of enthusiasm in the classroom. With my profound sympathy,

I often think of how wonderful it was that Mr. Macnab stood in front of the class and read Lord of the Flies and King Lear out loud. He had a great laugh one day when someone asked in desperation if we were ever to read anything happy! My sympathies for a good, kind mind.

I have good memories of Mr MacNab. I remember (well as much as any high school memory is reliable) having him for Grade 13 English, maybe others. Every time Hemingway comes in my consciousness I think of him. "Aficionado" is a favourite word of mine, and I have him to thank for understanding the rich context of the word. If a measure of one's life is the legacy that you leave behind, I think Mr. MacNab is worthy of an A+.
