Alan Michael "Mike" Mantz, 59, passed away on May 9, 2025, in
El Cajon, California. Born on October 10, 1965, in Auburn, New York, Mike lived a vibrant and adventurous life filled with passion for food, family, and the great outdoors. He moved to Montana in the late 80's with his first wife Lisa and raised their two children, Nate & Sophia, in Anaconda, Montana.
Mike would call himself a short-order cook, though his culinary journey took him far beyond that humble title. He held the position of Chef at several establishments throughout his career. One of his most cherished roles was as a Broiler Chef at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse-an experience made even more meaningful as it was there he met his second wife, Herminia Lopez (Galindo). Another highlight of his career was his time at Fairmont Hot Springs, where he not only honed his craft but also formed lasting friendships that remained close to his heart.
Mike's love for cooking began during his brief service in the Army, where he first stepped into a kitchen professionally. That spark ignited a lifelong dedication to the culinary arts. Over the years, he brought joy to countless people through the meals he prepared in restaurants across Montana and California. Whether crafting dishes for patrons or preparing feasts for friends and family at home, Mike found deep fulfillment in sharing good food with those around him.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mike was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his mother Norma Bancroft; his wife Herminia; son Nate Lopez; daughter Sophia Mantz; step-children Jessica, Luis, and Brandon; and brother Zach Mantz. He was preceded in death by his father Alan Mantz.
Mike's life outside the kitchen was equally rich and full of energy. In his younger years, he had a strong passion for sports-especially baseball-and later passed that love on by coaching his son Nathan's teams in Anaconda. He relished time spent outdoors: hunting with his good friend Robert, fishing for the thrill of landing a big catch, golfing 18 holes with buddies, or simply enjoying nature in Montana.
One of Mike's favorite things to do was to sit around a poker table with friends like Robert, Cora, Victor, Fred, and Jay-moments filled with laughter and avoiding the "rat" (IYKYK). Holidays were especially joyful for Mike; lighting fireworks on the Fourth of July became one of many traditions that brought him happiness.
A true San Diego Padres fan, Mike could often be found cheering from the stands at home games. He also loved animals and treasured visits to Dog Beach in California with family dogs Benito and Payton by his side. His adventurous spirit led him to explore other countries and seek out thrills at places like Six Flags theme park and the back of a deep sea fishing boat.
Whether sipping a well-made Margarita at a favorite local spot, preparing an unforgettable meal for loved ones or tending to his backyard greenery, Mike embraced life fully and generously shared that joy with others.
A celebration of life will be held for Mike at a later date. Details will be shared on Facebook.
May Alan Michael "Mike" Mantz's memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire those who carry forward the warmth and generosity he so freely gave.
