ALBERT AMSHEL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 5 to Oct. 6, 2015.
AMSHEL ALBERT LIVINGSTON, MD
Age 90, of Point Breeze. As he prayed, he died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 2, 2015. Son of the late Dr. Jesse Amshel and Ruth Bibo Amshel; husband of Ellen Bachman Amshel; father of Bruce and Gail Amshel; grandfather of Caitlyn and Eli Amshel. Upon graduating from New York Military Academy he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, WWII, where he was a radio operator/gunner, 381st. Bomber Group, on B-17s in the European Theater. After the war, he completed his BS degree in two years at the University of Pittsburgh, then his Medical Degree at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. After five years of surgical residency, he established private practice in Colon and Rectal Surgery. He said that he worked hard and played hard. An avid golfer and gin rummy player at Green Oaks Country Club, and a tap dancer, telling all that Gene Kelly was his teacher. He seemed to get the most out of life. Private interment was held in the West View Cemetery of the Rodef Shalom Congregation. Friends will be received at the family home, at the caller's convenience. Memorial contributions may be made to Operation Safety Net (a charity to benefit the homeless), 101 Bradford Rd., Ste. 320, Wexford, PA 15090. I met Dr.Amshel in 1960 . I was having problems and was referred to him by another physician. My first visit was"eye opening," he was so down to earth and so "real". I never met anyone like him before. He was probably one of the most memorable persons I had every met. Yes, he helped me in many ways, for many years. I am grateful to have had him as my physician and my friends, oh so many years ago. There will never be another one like him.

While a freshmen at Chatham College, Albert and Ellen "adopted" me in 1969. I'll always remember our Sunday family dinners when we passionately argued over the war in Vietnam. At the time, he vehemently defended the war, and I was the quintessential liberal. He was strong in his passion and beliefs, and strong enough to concede when his opinion eventually changed.

My Pittsburgh Father remained an integral part of my life until his life's end. He welcomed my fiance' into his family; he walked my birth mother and me down the aisle at our wedding; he joined my husband and me on safari.

I'll miss his passion for life and his keen intellect. His was a good life, well lived. May he rest in peace.
