Albert Dale "Dale" Flowerday, age 89, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro.
Dale proudly served his country in the US Army, during the Korean War. He received his BS in Agriculture, MS and PhD in Agronomy all from The University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He devoted his whole life to improving and teaching agriculture, as evidenced by his professional life.
Dale's true passion was people and the friendships he made. He didn't know a stranger and was known for his jokes. He had countless close friendships that he cherished. People loved Dale and he loved them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert G. and Flora Koch Flowerday; his first wife, Alice Flowerday; and brother, Bill Flowerday. Dale is survived by his wife, Marlene Faubion Flowerday; his four sons, Charlie, Stan, Ken (Linda) and Rich (Cherith) Flowerday; grandchildren, Sean, Issac, Seth, Luke and Shay Flowerday; step-children, Tony Marley, Charlene (Brian) Schubauer, Marty (Toni) Monnier and Tonda (Randy) Pruitt; grandchildren, Amanda LaVelle, Mary Crouch, TJ Marley, Danielle and Bailee Schubauer, Rick Tinsley, Kate Marler, Jenny Monnier, Jena Carrier, Ryden and Andrea Pruitt; sisters, Joyce Althouse and Elaine (Tony) Vrana; numerous great grandchildren; and special friends, Tony and Angie Woodall & Kurt and Kathy Kroger and their children, Jeremy, Macy, Brandon, Jessica and Stephanie.
Dale was born June 14, 1927 and raised in Bee, NE. He graduated from Seward High School in 1944 and went on to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in agronomy. He met Alice Boswell of Benkleman, NE while at UNL. They married and had four sons: Charlie, Stan, Ken and Rich. After graduating with a PhD, he began his professional career at UNL as an agronomist and was the first superintendent of the Northeast Experiment Station at Concord. He returned to the department of agronomy in 1964 to serve as leader of agronomy extension and out-state testing activities. He moved his young family to Bogota, Colombia, South America, where he served as deputy director of the Nebraska Mission to Colombia from 1967-69.
Upon returning to UNL he served as vice chairman of the department of agronomy from 1969-71, when he was named associate professor. He was promoted to full professor in 1973 with teaching and research responsibilities. At UNL he conducted research on irrigation, soybean yields, water use, and simulated hail damage at what is now the University of Nebraska Agriculture Research and Development Center near Mead. He helped initiate the crop management and diagnostic clinic at ARDC in 1996 and has assisted with the soybean management field days since 1998.
While teaching undergraduate and graduate agronomy courses, Flowerday was rated an excellent teacher by students in the introductory course in crops science. Dale received the UNL Student Foundation Builders Award for Teaching in 1974, 1975 and 1976. He received the university's Distinguished Teaching Award in science and technology sponsored by the Amoco Foundation and the Outstanding Teaching Award from the UNL chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta in 1976. During his professional career Dale received many other awards. While at UNL, he also led several student research trips to Colombia in the early 70's.
After retiring from UNL in 1983, he served as agronomy manager, Plains Division, Pioneer Hi-Bred International at Lincoln from 1983-94.
Dale married Marlene in 1992 and together they started DalMar Consulting in Lincoln where he provided crop consulting services as an independent agronomist. He is a member of the American Society of Agronomy, Sigma Xi scientific research society, Gamma Sigma Delta honor society of agriculture, and the Nebraska Association of Crop Consultants.
The family will receive local friend at their home, 2447 Trevor Trail, Murfreesboro, TN 37128 on Friday evening, June 16, 2017 from Six O'clock till Eight O'clock.

My husband Darrell Watts partnered with Dale on several international consulting trips. They always came back with great stories. Darrell passed away in January this year but I know he would have wanted to tell how much he appreciated and enjoyed Dale's company.

Dale,
Words cannot express the gratitude I have for you. You raised my daughter and you were truly the apple of her eye. I personally thank you (as I have in prayer many times). You always treated me with dignity and respect and it was always a joy to see you. The world needs more Dale Flowerdays. Sadly, we are short one of the most compassionate, understanding, and decent men this world desperately needs. Rest in peace and thank you for everything you have done for my daughter. You, Sir, will be sorely missed by many. God Bless.

I will always remember Dr. Flowerday as the person who changed my mind about pursuing Agronomy as a profession. His wit, charm and ability to make learning plant science fun is what attracted me, and after 30+ years in the business, I have no regrets. Rest in peace Dale.

My parents lived next door to the Flowerdays for many years. I remember Dale as being kind, considerate, and a true gentleman with a merry twinkle in his eye. I enjoyed our conversations. I also enjoyed the tomatoes he gave my parents who passed some of them along to me. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Flowerday was an inspiration. I was in one of his 1970s classes. He made agriculture an exciting and interesting field. His class was a delight. He was one of the main reasons I switched majors to Agriculture. And, I have enjoyed a long career in ag. Dr. Flowerday was very deserving of all the awards he received. He was an asset to agriculture.

Anyone that came in contact with Dr. Flowerday had a great opportunity to experience excellence. My first contact with him when I was a student and involved with the UNL Agronomy Club. Contact continued as I farmed and as I became a CCA and sat through many of his training sessions with the NeABA. Many more stories come to mind, but now only wishing condolences and prayers for the family. May you find comfort in knowing he was loved and respected by many.

I work at UNL (High Plains Regional Climate Center). Dale came in and got weather data from us for his work with Pioneer. It was such a treat when he came. He frequently brought roses from his house. He was a special person, and will be truly missed. Prayers are with you all.

It's hard to stay sad, when every memory I have of you makes me smile.

During my first hitch with Univ. NE,,I enjoyed a professional friendship with Dale, saw (and heard!) him at seminars & faculty meetings--yes, laced with his own brand of humor! Shortly after Dale was appointed Superintendent I drove up to the Northeast Experiment Station, parked on the south road, I saw this tractor sliding its way from the north end of the farm toward me, on a very muddy field. At last, with tires carrying a thick layer of mud Dale reached the road, shut off the tractor and growled "...do you want to buy a damn farm?" We joked about that incident many times, as he converted that farm into a productive research and extension arm of the University of Nebraska. A dedicated professional, excellent professor, insightful scientist and faculty leader.

The University of Nebraska made a wise choice in placing him as the instructor for Agronomy 101. He was the man to make freshmen feel comfortable with college and instill a desire to dive deeper into the plant sciences. Dale leaves a great legacy of practicing agronomists that he helped to train and mentor. Rest in peace, Dr. Flowerday!

Best professor I had when I was in Lincoln, great educator and humorist, which he used together to help you learn and remember. He had an uncanny knack for sensing when his class's interest was waning on a subject he was teaching and always had a humorous anecdote to interject to bring your attention back to what he wanted you take away from that day's lecture. Nebraska agriculture has been blessed by the legacy of Dale Flowerday.
Dale's humorous stories are living on through our Nebraska Extension family.
I really enjoyed his personality even as an undergraduate at UNL back in the early 1980's. Now, as a Nebraska Extension Educator, I offer thanks to Dale's family, since Dale will always be an UNL Extension icon.

Dale will always be remembered by our family. He married my sister MARLENE and we are so happy they were able to share many years together. We always enjoyed Dale, his beautiful smile, wit and humor. He was kind and compassionate and encouraging to all. A true blessing to all who knew him, there's no doubt he's in heaven with our Lord. My Sister, MARLENE, and Dale enjoyed a beautiful marriage and this relationship was an example to all of us. God truly blessed our family with this precious man. Praising God for Dr Dale Flowerday.
