Harlingen - Alejo Romero died February 10, 2018 after a brief illness. He was born in Weslaco, Texas on July 17, 1921. He was preceded in death by his parents Francisco Romero and Feliciana Zavala Romero; his brothers Pedro, Andres, Macedonio, Daniel, Francisco, Agapito (Agapo) and Agapito (Tito) Romero; his sisters Dolores Romero Rodriguez and Soledad Romero Garcia; his sons Francisco, Mario and his infant twins Marco Alejandro Romero and Maricela Imelda Romero.

Alejo is survived by his wife of 43 years Lidia Garza Romero; his sons Alejo and Max Romero; his daughters Linda Feleciana Romero, Anadelia (Nellie) Serna (Luis) and Marisela Martinez; his sisters Maria Galvan (Alonzo) and Chavela Corona (Martin). Alejo is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren and nephews and nieces.

Alejo was a migrant worker during his childhood and adolescence. Alejo served in the Army in Europe during World War II and was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars serving as Post Commander of Post 9784 from 1992 - 1993 and a member of the American Legion. He was a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, Advanced Addiction Counselor and National Certified Addictions Counselor until his retirement in 2010.

Alejo was Executive Director of Rio Grande Valley Midway House, Inc., a residential facility for alcoholics and drug addicts. He established many modalities of treatment that were very effective for alcoholics and drug addicts. He specialized in treating the Hispanic alcoholics and drug addicts and their families. However he was equally effective with other population. He used among other modalities the 12 Step programs. He started a private practice before his retirement in 2010.

There will be two services, one in Harlingen and one in McAllen. The Harlingen service is still pending. The service in McAllen will take place on March 5, 2018 in the Central Christian Church 1320 W. Nolana at 11:00 AM.

RIP Tio Alejo. I remember the times when you would visit us. Always arrived with a smile and left with out one (after all the kids jumped on you). Say Hi to Grandma Juanita.
