Dr. Alex Rudoff, professor of graduate education at Chapman University, died March 17, 2003, after a lengthy illness. He was 78.An Apple Valley resident since 1972, Alex served as vice president of Administrative Services/ Personnel until his retirement from that post in 1987. While vice president, Alex was responsible for building and equipping the Performing Arts Center and initiated Victor Valley CollegeÕs Master Artist Series. Born in Los Angeles in 1924, Alex served in the Navy in the Philippines during World War II. In 1949, Alex earned a masterÕs degree in history and in 1968, a doctorate in education, both from the University of Southern California.His 55 years as an educator began as a civilian teacher on American air bases in Germany. After completing his overseas stint, Alex became a teacher and later vice principal at Luther Burbank Junior High School from 1956 through 1968. He was the first principal of Kolb Junior High in Rialto during 1968 to 1969, and from late 1969 through 1972, he was the principal of Monrovia High School. Alex became Dean of Community Services at Victor Valley College in 1972, and later served as vice president of administrative services and personnel at VVC. While at VVC, he initiated the College Master Artists Series and in his role as dean of Community Services he became president of Desert Communities United Way in 1977. A long-time Rotarian, he was president of Victorville Rotary Club and served in many positions within that organization. During his 35 years as a Rotarian, he was honored by the Victorville club as a Paul Harris Fellow as well as Rotarian of the Year. He was a member of the Apple Valley Friends of the Library, High Desert Air Force Association, the High Desert Symphony and a long-time member of the Apple Valley Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jacqueline, his son John and his daughter Alexandra. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Victor Valley College of Performing Arts Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Dr. Alex Rudoff Memorial Fund, in care of the Victor Valley College Foundation, 18422 Bear Valley Road, Victorville, CA 92392. Sunset Hills Mortuary is handling arrangements.
