Alexander Beirne Obituary

Alexander Christian Beirne

Ojai - Our wonderful son, Alexander Christian Beirne, died suddenly on Friday, August 30, 2019 at the age of 38. He battled drug addiction and mental illness for many years, so we were prepared on some level for his passing, but he and our family had high hopes that he'd be able to beat his addiction. Alex leaves behind his parents, Kevin and Christine Beirne; his brother Daniel (Yennyn); his brother Casey (Jolene); his brother David; his niece Tearney; his nephews Aidan, Ethan and Logan (aka Little Loggie); his grandparents Helen and James Apostolina; his grandfather Jack Beirne (Debbie); his uncle Stephen (Karen); his uncle Michael Apostolina (Nic Garcia); his uncle Kent (Darcy) Beirne; his aunt Susan Beirne; his aunt Jeri Beirne and many cousins. He was predeceased by his grandmother Jean Beirne and his uncle Kerry Berine. He also leaves behind his good friend Crystal Freeman and her dog Callie. Alex could be your child. He played soccer, baseball and football. We went to all his games and sat down to home-cooked meals at night. He picked up the bass at a young age, and as one of my friends said, "He's Howling Wolf reborn." He loved to learn and read, and when he was young, his math skills were several grade levels ahead of his age. He was considered "gifted," but unfortunately, once he started taking meth, he could never let go of it for more than a few years and his gifts slid by the wayside. He had various jobs including commercial fishing, flooring, plumbing, tile and masonry. He loved playing with his niece and nephews (they were all squirts) and bought his niece her first skateboard when she was a toddler. He loved hanging out with family and friends and was thrilled when he could beat his uncle Stephen in arm wrestling. The last couple of years he loved singing - especially country music. It gave him so much joy to just belt out songs. Two weeks ago, I told him that one day there would be a vaccine for this terrible disease. For those who think drug addiction is strictly a choice - yes, it is at first. But for some, drug addiction changes their brain chemistry and develops into something which gives them very little choice in the matter. Alex also had schizoaffective bipolar disorder, and as we discovered, our mental health system is truly a mess. Ventura County has no residential long-term mental health housing (except for jail!) unless you can afford 30 thousand dollars a month. Ventura County's Behavioral Health "crisis team" seemed more concerned with figuring out how not to help, than helping. Mental health and drug addiction are intertwined and it's our hope that one day our government institutions will take seriously the treatment of individuals who are suffering from these sometimes-deadly ailments. We did receive help through NAMI (National Association of Mental Illness) and encourage you in lieu of flowers, to make donations to NAMI of Ventura County. We also would like to thank his legal team of Jeremy Lessem, Danielle Tamir, Arianna Roco and Ratan Bhavnani for all their support.

I can't imagine the pain it is to lose a child. Alex was a one of a kind person. I was fond of him the moment I met him. He was so easy to like, talk to, and laugh with. I'm sorry for the loss of Alex to all of his immediate family and friends. I will never forget him. Love, Janet

Mr and Mrs Bierne, I'm very sorry for your loss. Alex sounded like a great guy. I don't know why some of us make it out and others don't. My deepest condolences.

Christine, Kevin and the family.
Words can't express the hurt and sadness were feeling for our family right now. We all know he's in a better place but our hearts are torn into a million pieces. Always know we love all of you and may Alex Rest In Peace.

Our family knows this struggle, and outcome, all too well. Thank you for your honest and bittersweet account of Alexander's short life. Without a tremendous amount of money, there is really nowhere to turn. May you find peace knowing that Alexander's suffering has ended, and joy in your happy memories. We know he was loved and valued, in spite of his significant struggles.

I'm so sorry for your loss and understand too well about this crisis as I live in ojai too and have a son dealing with the same thing at 34, the meth, induced psychosis, schizophrenia from the meth affect, and yes the system is a failure, just keep locking them up instead of understanding the addiction, very sad for everyone involved!

I am so sorry for your loss. I also watched my older brother go from jovial, professional, center of the family gatherings to anti-social, disillusioned, and embittered in a matter of a couple years due to methamphetamine. He is still with us but certainly not the same. Our experience with local "crisis team" and pertaining infrastructure is similar, essentially they are of little assistance. Myself and my parents did everything we could to bring him back. God bless you all, GVentura

Christine and Kevin, Daniel and Casey and their families, I loved Alex. He was a gentle giant of a man to me. He loved big and lived big and I was in awe of him and all of you, actually. Alex loved his brothers' children so much which I saw first-hand. He always had time for them and loved to be with all of his family. His eyes carried more than beauty, but love, strength, and mischief. Alex, I will wait to see you again on the other side, but look forward to it. In the interim, watch over us all, please. I know you will and am proud to think of you as our family's protector. I love you, Beirne family and am sending prayers for comfort and serenity. May God hold you in His loving arms until you can resume going on without Alex! XXOO
