Alexander HALKETT Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Feb. 15, 2014.
HALKETT, Alexander Morgan DFM
RCAF Wing Commander (ret'd)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander Morgan Halkett on February 11, 2014 at age 91 in Ottawa. He left us very peacefully at dawn…the perfect time of day for a pilot to depart on his final journey home. Alex was born in Peace River, Alberta on August 2, 1922, the son of dearly loved parents Dave and Agnes. He is predeceased by his adored wife of 67 years, Hilda, and dear daughter Mary. He will be very deeply missed by his daughters Carolynn (Trites) and Alexandra, son-in-law Peter Oberle, grandchildren Andrew, Stephen (Allison) and Asia. Alex was the proud great-grandfather to Madeleine, Sydney and Chelsea Trites and will be missed by many family members in the UK and US. Alex joined the RCAF in 1941 and had a distinguished career in World War II as a skilled and decorated pilot with Bomber Command, receiving the DFM from King George VI in 1943. In 1945, Alex returned to Canada with his new bride, Hilda. He remained in the RCAF and had many postings including Squadron Leader at Trenton, Wing Commander and in command of 404 Squadron in Greenwood, Co-Director of Maritime Warfare School in Halifax and finally with DND in Ottawa. Retiring from the RCAF in 1968, he joined Industry Canada to work in the emerging field of aerospace development until 1986, during which time his passion for flight continued. Alex embraced life to the end, enjoying time with his family and friends. The Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 6 at 1pm at Bells Corners United Church, 3955 Old Richmond Road. Service will be followed by a reception
then a private inurnment. Those wishing to make a donation may do so to the charity of their choice.

Dear porky Due to the miles between us our families were not together very often
While you were stationed in England during teh second world war and met and married Hilda was a special time for our family
You once told me that there was no other family you would have rather been in than the "Dumbletons" that feeling was mutual
Thankyou for all that you did to keep us safe during those awful War years.
When you were posted back to England to the RAF base in Upwood we were going there with you and as we drove through the gate they saluted you .
That is what we are doing today
Several years ago during our Dumbleton family re union in ascot, arranged by Bob and June ,you and Bob serenaded us with a rendition of the"Whiffennpoof " song as you had done many years before
Now you are once again with Hilda and indeed some of the "Dumbleton "family members I hope you can keep them in order !
I shall miss your e mails
Bye for now, love Betty, Don and family

Hilda

they saluted you That is what we are doing today.
i remember you once saying to me "there is no family i would rather be a part of than the Dumbletons" the feeling is mutual.
Several years ago we had wonderful family reunion in Ascot, England arranged by Bob and June You and Bob gave us a rendition of the " Whiffenpoofs song" as you had done many years ago
i am glad to have many more memories.

Alexandra and family - I can't remember when I've read a more heartwarming tribute. Alex, you father was obviously an amazing, out-of-the-ordinary man, and will be much missed. A "fighter" in every sense of the word. I am very sorry for your loss. Best regards, Catherine (& Bruce)

Porky was such a huge part of our lives for many, many years there is such void now that he is gone. We had so many good times together, we had so much respect for him as did everyone who met him. As long as he was here we also felt Hilda was still with us but they truly belonged with each other and now they can spend an eternity together.
We will remember always your theme song Porky "Alexander's Ragtime Band".
Drop me an e-mail sometime, maybe we can skype soon. We loved you, Mary and Joe.
Our love and concolences to all of the family, you will miss him terribly.
He was a special Dad, Grandfather and Great Grandfather.
There will never be another "Porky"

The loves of Uncle Porky's life.

What a loss, Porky and his late wife Hilda were two of the kindness people I have known. I have over the lastr few years missed our great conversations and debates about a variety of subjects of of course the war efforts and his role. Canada can be proud to have had a man like Porky working on our side.

Uncle Porky, as we called him, was a very special joy on this earth. So full of life & savoring every minute, he was an inspiration to live life to the fullest. And Aunt Hilda was a lovely, talented & loving partner in life. They were such a cute couple. Phil & I enjoyed getting to know them & meeting many of your family when we were in Ottawa. Hilda Jean's family is our family and that has been a real blessing to us. We know you'll rejoice recalling thousands of wonderful memories of these two remarkable loved ones.
