Alexander McCullough Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 31, 2022.
Alexander "Al" McCullough, 83, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on August 25, 2022, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He will always be remembered as a true gentleman and loyal friend.

Al is survived by his four children, Elizabeth (Nick Saracco) Amato, David (Leah) McCullough, Ryan (Taylor) McCullough, and Melissa Hoyt; his four grandchildren, Christopher (Amato), Jacob, Killian, and Charlotte McCullough; his nephew, Ken (Sharon) Lamb; cousins, extended family and countless colleagues and friends. Gifted with a brilliant mind, great sense of humor, and a deep desire to improve the lives of others, Al McCullough definitely made his mark on this world.

Al was born May 28, 1939, to Alexander Sr. and Eva (Benedict) McCullough in Norwood, PA. He was the fourth of five children and their only son. He was raised with strong values and felt the most important things in life were faith, family and friends. Al was athletic and quickly discovered a love for the game of baseball that endured throughout his life. That said, if there was ever a sport that Al loved more than baseball, it was golf. All will agree, some of the best moments of his life were spent with friends and family on some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the world. Al's love of golf, undoubtedly, inspired him to live in Georgia and Arizona for long portions of his life. He often said "God didn't put golf courses in ugly places". He has also resided in New Jersey, Kansas City, and had a brief stint in the glacial state Minnesota.

Al was a natural leader with a generous soul. His professional career spanned over 50 years working alongside some of the greatest retailers and shopping center developers in the world. Although he would have never claimed this, Al was a humble legend in the industry, known for his negotiating skills. He loved the industry and the industry loved him back! The friendships and experiences he acquired in the industry will always be the greatest of his life.

Al was a truly selfless man. He never missed the opportunity to share how he felt about the people he loved or to make someone feel valued. His ability to connect with people on such a deep level was a blessing to everyone who knew him. Al was an excellent storyteller with the ability to make his audience listen intently and hang on his every word-whether it was a true story or a setup for a joke. He often said that his day was not over until he made someone laugh. Al was also an ardent animal lover. In honor of Al's love for animals and the unbreakable bond he shared with his best pal Cody, please consider donating to the Arizona Humane Society www.azhumane.org/.

Please join us as we celebrate Al's incredible life! His celebration of life service is currently being planned. Details to be announced shortly.

Al was always there - at anytime after 3:00/3:30 a.m. Arizona time - to answer my call to talk about business, personal matters or just to say hello.

We first met rolling out Brooks Brothers stores across Canada and spent many days and nights over the years in New York, Las Vegas, Toronto and Vancouver going from 30 minute meeting to 30 minute meeting with Landlords on the ICSC trade show floor and it never failed to amaze me how much people loved him.
Walking along the aisles of the show with Al was like walking with royalty. People were constantly coming up to him to shake his hand or to recount how he had given them their start in the business or had been there to coach them during their time together.

He was a Legend!

He beamed confidence, empathy and personality. That big warm smile and his twinkling eyes were contagious.

He´d come up to Toronto annually for Joe Carter´s Golf Tournament and always make sure that I was there to meet him (our local hero).

Al introduced me to Snoop Dog! How did Al know Snoop Dog???

And, while I am not an avid golfer like Al, he always ensured that when we were together we played. It was his favourite time. While we rode together we´d talk about family and by the end of the round I´d have figured out how to solve all of my problems.

I loved his jokes and he never repeated one of them. I could never understand how he remembered so many of them?

I´ll miss him and I know that anyone who knew him will too.

Bye Al. You were the best!

Our Dear neighbor just shy of a year, yes we played golf , we shared good food, I was honored to prepare the best baby back ribs he ever ate, and we know he was a world traveler. We enjoyed great conversation with fresh blueberry muffins and strong coffee. We are envious of those that knew Alex for a life time. We are blessed that he called us his Friend. One of my favorite conversations with Alex, he shared a poem with me. The Man In The Mirror Written by D. Wimbrow 1934.
We miss you so !!!!

We feel blessed to have shared life with Al the past 7 years that our children have been together. We could not ask for a better father-in-law law for our daughter, or a better son-in-law for us. Al always had a welcoming smile for everyone he came in contact with and a great story to fit any situation. I will miss golfing with him and the great conversations we had, as well as the free golf lessons. He had that special gift of always helping the people he had contacts with to realize how special they are. We are grateful for his legacy that lives on through his children and grandchildren as well as the many lives he touched during his lifetime.

Right about now Al is enjoying the great golf courses in heaven. His eyesight is 20/20, he is strong and he's smashing the ball down the middle. If contributing to others in this world makes it easier in the afterlife, Al will enjoy heaven to the fullest. Sinking putts and making friends for eternity.

My cousin, Al McCullough, was truly special and very much like his father before him, just with a different set of challenges and opportunities. I´m so greatfull to have reconnected with him in recent years. Together we published a book,"McCullough Stories" in tribute to and as something of a love letter to family past and present. His reputation as a warm, wonderful man is well deserved.
