Alfred Cady Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 24 to Jun. 27, 2010.
Alfred M. Cady Jr. June 21, 2010 Alfred M. Cady Jr. died peacefully at his home on June 21, 2010. Al was born in Syracuse on January 4, 1918. He graduated from Nottingham High School in 1935. While a student at Nottingham, he fell in love with Patricia "Pat" Brown. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1940 and married Pat on May 30, 1942. After serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WW II, he returned to Syracuse, where he became a salesman for the McMillan Book Co. and the Rome Soap Co. Subsequently he joined his father at the Syracuse Oil Co. Al shortly became president of the company and had a successful career building and expanding the oil business. After his family, which always came first, he loved to fish, golf and play bridge. When he retired in 1975, Al and Pat moved to Marco Island, Florida, where they lived by the ocean and spent countless hours together fishing and exploring the area. They often fished with their friend and guide, Todd Geroy, who eventually named two remote bays in the 10,000 Islands for them--Al's Bayou and Pat's Bayou. Al was a member of Onondaga Golf and Country Club for 57 years. He was considered one of its finest putters; however, his proudest golfing moments were his two holes in one. When he could no longer golf, he continued to visit the club twice a week to play bridge with his loyal friends who faithfully transported him from his apartment at the Nottingham to the club. He was also a longtime member of the Royal Poinciana Golf Club in Naples FL, and the Century Club, and University Club of Syracuse. Al was predeceased by his wife, Pat, in 2007 and his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1963. He is survived by his sons, Al Cady (Toni) of Edina, MN, and Bob Cady (Linda); of Naples, FL; his daughter, Jane Haley of Greenwich, CT; his brother-in-law, Robert Brown (Barb) of Syracuse, NY; nine grandchildren; five great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church in DeWitt. NY. Calling hours will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Ballweg and Lunsford Funeral Home, 2584 Field Lane, Lafayette, NY. Arrangements are entrusted to Sehl Burns Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elizabeth C. Cady Children's Cancer Fund. Donations may be sent to the Foundation for Upstate Medical University, 750 East Adams Street (CAB Room 326), Syracuse, NY 13210. Sehl Burns Funeral Service 445-9727

Your Dad was a wonderful friend to our parents. Didn't they all have a fun time together? They truly were the Greatest Generation. I know Charlie will miss Al and I'm sure Pat, Iddo, Bar and Fowler are busy playing bridge in heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.....Jumpin' Al, Bob, Jane, Betsy and all your family.

Jane, Betsy and the rest of the Cadys,
I'm sorry for your sadness. He seemed like such an interesting man. Funny, we set up a day to play cards but then he refused because the game was HEARTS! Glad to know he was particular. Fondly, Kathy Doyle

Jane, Bob, Al and the family - I am so sad that I will not be with you to celebrate Mr. Cady's extraordinary life. I feel like I had a special relationship with "Gramps," as I'm sure did all who knew him. I will miss him dearly. My condolences to you all and I hope to see you soon.

Dear Bob and Al:
Your Dad and Mom were great company at the Nottingham while Ellen and Bob Fairchild lived there. And of course we share fine memories of Camp Dudley.
