When my father informed me that Alfred Johnson had passed away, I was saddened but mostly, I remembered his kindness and his loving & caring attitude toward me when we visited each other several times in the past. He was a wonderful man and was always smiling. I have always liked him. You can feel his friendliness from him easily. May God bless him always and forever. Love, Laura Bensen from New Orleans,Louisiana

(Granddaughter of Alfred Johnson; daughter of Jack Winter)

Al. Kim, Allison, Katie, and I thought you'd be proud of our big fish. You showed us how.

I had a feeling last night that a great spirit had passed when I saw a brilliant fireball fall from the North Star through the Big Dipper. When I received word that Al had passed away this morning, I knew that was Screamin AJ soaring "like a bat out of hell" (one of his favorite lines) to a place where the trout are plentiful, Johnny Carson still comes on every night, and where Margie can still make him his favorite hamburgers.

Al taught me many things that I still think about almost every day. How to make the most of the work you do, how to be a good husband (Grandma Johnson wasn't always the easiest woman to live with), and how to enjoy every minute we have and find the humor in everything. I spent two long summers with Al, one traveling with him to find his "roots" in South Dakota and the other working on his crew. They were simply the two finest summers of my life.

And if there's anything I will pass on to my kids that I learned from Al, it will be how to be patient, don't jerk the bobber, and wait for the big fish.

I will miss Al. But I'll never forget how wonderful and kind and generous he was to me those many years ago.

God bless you, Al, and leave some fish for me.
