Alfred Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2005.
Alfred William Johnson "Screamin' AJ" Born in Perkins County, Shade Hill, South Dakota on August 25, 1917, to Heinrich and Fredericka Jonsson. In 1907 his parents homesteaded 160 acres on a remote section of the Great Plains. He was the seventh of nine children with two of his older brothers dying at birth. He began farming at an early age and attended rural school where he was able to complete his 7th grade studies. He enlisted in the Army Air Force during World War II, known as the 8th Air Force Group. He was D-day +3 honorably serving in the European Theater as a truck driver until his release on November 14, 1945. On September 28, 1945 he married Marjorie May Moore Winter Johnson, she was the love of his life until her death on June 27, 1994. They had only one child, a son, Steven L. Johnson. Together Alfred and Marjorie also cared for her two children from a previous marriage, John R. Winter and Rueleen Holladay. Alfred started his own concrete construction company in 1950 at which he was very successful and helped many other men do the same. He was the task-master that demanded and received top quality and workmanship from his employees. He truly loved working hard and always set the example. Alfred and Marjorie also loved to travel. They went on many trips abroad with their dear friends, Bud and Emily Smith. Boating, camping, hunting and fishing were also some favorite pastimes. Also, taking their travel trailers to Arizona where they would winter "Snow Birds" as the locals called them. My father and I are most grateful to all the special caregivers at the Infinia Nursing Home where Alfred passed peacefully on Wednesday, November 3, 2005. These folks were very kind and gentle with him and provided him the best of care. Alfred is survived by his younger brother, Harry; son, Steven and his family, Valerie, Mercedes, Nicholas and Angela, also many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Friday, November 4th, 2 p.m. at Redwood Memorial Cemetery, 6500 S. Redwood Rd. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services in the mortuary.

When my father informed me that Alfred Johnson had passed away, I was saddened but mostly, I remembered his kindness and his loving & caring attitude toward me when we visited each other several times in the past. He was a wonderful man and was always smiling. I have always liked him. You can feel his friendliness from him easily. May God bless him always and forever. Love, Laura Bensen from New Orleans,Louisiana

Al. Kim, Allison, Katie, and I thought you'd be proud of our big fish. You showed us how.

I had a feeling last night that a great spirit had passed when I saw a brilliant fireball fall from the North Star through the Big Dipper. When I received word that Al had passed away this morning, I knew that was Screamin AJ soaring "like a bat out of hell" (one of his favorite lines) to a place where the trout are plentiful, Johnny Carson still comes on every night, and where Margie can still make him his favorite hamburgers.

Al taught me many things that I still think about almost every day. How to make the most of the work you do, how to be a good husband (Grandma Johnson wasn't always the easiest woman to live with), and how to enjoy every minute we have and find the humor in everything. I spent two long summers with Al, one traveling with him to find his "roots" in South Dakota and the other working on his crew. They were simply the two finest summers of my life.

And if there's anything I will pass on to my kids that I learned from Al, it will be how to be patient, don't jerk the bobber, and wait for the big fish.

I will miss Al. But I'll never forget how wonderful and kind and generous he was to me those many years ago.

God bless you, Al, and leave some fish for me.
