Alfie and I were children together. As adults we grew apart, but I thought this photo of Sammy, Jerry, and Alfie with their cousin first cousin, Bonnie Lou, would be of interest.

Alfie and I were childhood friends from middle school in Pasadena, Texas. Our families were very close and Alfie was so very special. I am saddened to hear that he is gone.

Alfie and I met in a class on Dostoevsky and Tolstoy at the University of Houston around 1972. We had a mutual friend, the late Congressman Mickey Leland and we quickly became fast friends. He introduced me to the legendary Bluesman, Lightnin' Hopkins for whom he played drums, an introduction that changed and in many ways was a very important episode in my life. He was only two weeks older than me. He was such a kind, cool, gentle spirit, I am so sorry we do not still occupy the same planet, but I hope the myths of a better future are true and that he is sailing through the cosmos as smoothly as he lived his life. Thank you very much Alfie. So long but never good bye.
I know that this is a late comment, but I just got word.

Dear Carmen and Cathy, We share your grief and join you in mourning our dear, sweet Alfie. We remember a beautiful, kind, loving brother, uncle, and friend. He was a mild mannered, elegant man who adored you girls and loved his family and friends. We also remember a talented musician and caring doctor who was truly color blind and valued his many friendships across many miles and through many years. May God bless you both with happy memories. My favorite memory of Alfie: Sharing good conversation and a good cup of coffee with one of the kindest men I've ever known. May God bless him and keep him in His care. We love you both. Mr. Naifeh was a sweet man. I knew him only as a friend but he cared for me as his son. I never quite understood what unfettered love was until I met Alfred. On the surface unbiased but when he really was intrigued by something you could see it burning in his eyes. I love this man not for what he gave me but for always speaking his mind in truth even if I didn't want to hear it. I will never forget our talks Alfred.
With all my love

I guess we never think that we'll die someday, so we never think our friends will, either.
Good-bye, dear old friend. Rest in peace, and I'll forgive you for being better looking than me.

Dear Cathy,
This is your Aunt Mary in Michigan. Honey , my heart aches for you to lose your father at such an early age. I am so sorry. God be with you and help you through this & always. You will see your daddy again one day, but that's not much comfort now.
We just heard late last night. Johnny doesn't seem to have a phone, but I know where he lives & I'm heading down there shortly. Going to call the airlines & see what we can do to get there by wednesday. I'll do my best.
Very sincerely,
Aunt Mary

The funny thing is that you never appreciate what you had yesterday until it is gone today. Memories may be beautiful and yet what's too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget. It's the laughter that we will remember when we remember the way we were. We LOVE you dearly Baba ! ! !

My heart breaks to hear this sad news about my cousin, Alfie. How he adored his precious daughter Cathy and Carmen ! What fun we had as kids ! He took me to see James Brown at the Big Oak Club just over the border from Orange, Texas in Louisiana & gave me my first Jimmy Hendrix & Led Zeppelin albums. I'll never forget it. My thoughts & prayers are with you both.
