HASHMI, Ali Imran Shah, MD, FCCP
Ali Imran Shah Hashmi, MD, FCCP, known to his family as Irshad (the guide), born January 12, 1943, passed away peacefully Monday morning at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. Born in India, Dr. Hashmi studied medicine at King Edward College in Lahore, Pakistan. With nothing but a suitcase and a yearning for knowledge, he arrived in the United States and began his internship at Danbury Hospital. After completing his residency and fellowship at St. Francis, he spent four years as the Chief of Pulmonary Medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Hartford. Later, Dr. Hashmi established his own private medical practice which would span four decades, caring for thousands of people who would travel from as far as Maine and Florida for office visits in Hartford. As a doctor and mentor, Dr. Hashmi was described by all who knew him as a remarkably caring healer and a compassionate teacher to his patients, colleagues and students. No medical case was too hopeless for him to take on: patients often came to him as a last resort. In their own words, "[Dr. Hashmi] understood that people are more than just flesh and blood: there's a soul, there's a spirit...he was better than perfect; it was a real calling for him." Nurses, PAs and medical and surgical colleagues would rely on Dr. Hashmi's in depth and intuitive grasp of all things related to medicine, whether it was consulting on a particularly difficult case or just lending an ear to help read a complicated scan or X-ray. He encouraged all under his tutelage to complete their studies as fully as possible; many went on to more advanced medical degrees as a result of time spent with him on the wards. Dr. Hashmi's patience, kindness and forbearance extended into all realms of his life. Founding the Islamic Center of Connecticut in 1980, Dr. Hashmi watched the small crowd of Friday prayer faithful grow into and then out of a two-family home on Hungerford Street in Hartford, now called Masjid Muhammad. In 1993, he found a perfect location for a stand-alone mosque to accommodate the growing community, which has blossomed into the Madina Masjid in Windsor. A loving husband, father and brother, Dr. Hashmi is survived by Mary (Ford) Hashmi, his wife of 40 years, his children, Ali, Sara, Christopher and Kecia (Felton) Harper and Jonathan Harper, eight brothers and sisters, numerous nieces, nephews, and a very large extended family.
As is common in the Islamic tradition, the funeral services were held as soon as possible after his passing on Monday; his burial was completed by sunset. In a beautiful and loving tribute to Dr. Hashmi's life, nearly 1,500 people arrived at the Madina Masjid Monday afternoon from all across the state, throughout New England, New York and New Jersey, and as far away as Washington D.C., Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and California, with all except his immediate family coming on only a few hours notice. His family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to the entire medical, surgical and nursing staff at St. Francis for the excellent care and compassion they provided to Dr. Hashmi and his family in recent years and especially during his terminal illness. Dr. Hashmi made many lifelong friends at the St. Francis and Mount Sinai medical centers during his 40 year career. He will be missed by many of all religions, professions and walks of life. A Qur'an reading will be held at the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford, 1781 Wilbur Cross Highway, today from 5:30-7:30 p.m., with dinner following. His family would also like to extend an invitation to those who wish to celebrate and honor his life and legacy of faith and healing this Sunday afternoon. The Memorial Reception will be held at the West Hartford Meeting & Conference Center, 50 South Main Street, starting at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Dr. Hashmi can be made to the St. Francis Foundation: stfranciscare.org/foundation. Please direct any contributions to the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department.

It was my pleasure to have known the Hashmi family for many years as I was their dentist. When I retired in 2008, I lost contact with the family and did not know until today that both Mary and Ali have died. They were extraordinary people.
May they rest in peace,

We are shocked to hear of Dr. Hashmi's passing.
A finer physician will never be! Dedicated, caring, loving, soft spoken and gentle. He gave of himself through his work and unselfish time he spent with his patients. We knew Dr. Hashmi since 1980 and trusted him as our sole caregiver. He took care of myself, wife, grandfather, and son. He always knew what was wrong and we could count on him to get us feeling well again. He helped us through some very difficult times and we are forever grateful. He was not only our physican but a true friend!
We would like to thank you, his family for graciously sharing him with us. We are thankful for the sacrifices that you made as a family to allow him to be so dedicated to his practice.
May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.

My sincerest condolences to all the Hashmi's and Harpers. If Ali was the spiritual inspiration of your family, Mary, you were his staff of life and true soul mate. I am most disappointed not to have been present at any of the recent celebrations of Ali's life because all of you were very special to me as I cared for your oral health. I was in Egypt when he passed away and learned of his death only this AM.

Dr. Hashmi was a true physician. A doctor with both qualities: medical knowledge, and compassion. He was careful with and dedicated to his patients. He was always willing to share his knowledge with others and to give his time to his patients with no limits.
He is the most dedicated Physician I ever met. With his wisdom and amazing expertise, he changed the lives of endless sick people and for that he will be forever missed in this world and rewarded in heaven.
During his last months of life, I noticed in his face something very difficult to describe. I noticed a facial expression such as a "light." I also noticed that, in spite of his hard work, day by day his facial expression was diferent from the ones around him: his face looked peaceful and saintly.
To work with him was a priveledge. I wish peace to his loved ones. He will be missed by all the people he touched in his life.

My family grew up across the street from Dr. Hashmi, his wife Mary and his family in Simsbury. Our son and daughter were schoolmates of his son, Ali, and his daughter, Sara. They were ideal neighbors, quiet, caring, respectful and imbued with unimpeachable integrity.
If all who inhabit this earth exhibited the character resplendent within the Hashmi family, mutual cooperation and progress among the peoples of the world would be significantly advanced from where it is today.
Perhaps the most telling example of Dr. Hashmi's and his wife's compassion for others was their adoption of two young boys, Chris and Jonathan Harper, whose parents had both died when they were quite young. Ali and Mary took these two youngsters into their home and raised them as their own. If there is a greater generosity of the spirit, pray tell me where it is and I will gladly exalt it. I wonder how many of us, regardless of race, ethnicity or religion would as selflessly do the same if confronted with similar circumstances.

I am a friend of Dr Hashmi's daughter, Sara. I never knew or met her dad. Going by his legacy of sharing and serving others, I see where Sara gets her sense of generosity & community from. I am so inspired by all that he accomplished in such a short time- not his professional credentials so much but the big & little differences he made in people's lives.
