Alice Gillis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2011.
Alice H. Gillis Alice H. Gillis, 93, of Gloucester, wife of the late Vincent A. Gillis Sr., died on Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Golden Living Center. She was born in Cambridge, MA on December 25, 1917, daughter of the late Anthony and Tofilia (Wenckus) Silkinis. Alice was a graduate of Cambridge Latin High School, Class of 1938. She was employed for Polaroid when it was in its early years, then she worked for many years at Harvard University Graduate School of Education until her retirement in the late 1970s. She summered in Gloucester for approximately 25 years, then made it her year round home upon her retirement. Alice, since a child, enjoyed playing piano and later the accordion with sing alongs that were so popular in her time. This included her familys Lithuanian tunes that were played at many family gatherings. She loved walking and had an incredible rock garden and green thumb. Alice always had something baked on hand especially in blueberry season. She would pick buckets of blueberries in season to support her baking ambitions. At the age of 92, she would still be seen laughing or have a fishing rod in her hand. In the middle of winter, she could be talked into being brought out to an ice fishing shack in the middle of the frozen lake. Alice wasnt really a fisherman, but she was a good sport and would go along with whatever the family thought best or fun for her. Alice was a sweet lady and loved by all of her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Ohm and her husband William of Nashua, NH; two sons, Vincent A. Gillis Jr. and his wife Nancy and Ron Gillis and his wife Jane all of Gloucester; four grandchildren, Heather Ross and her husband Shawn of Salem, MA, Sarah Laxton and her husband K.C. of Lowell, MA, Adam Gillis and his wife Lady of East Boston and Kerry Gillis of Newburyport. Her funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester on Friday, Jan. 21, at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Mass in St. Anns Church, Holy Family Parish at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home are on Thursday from 5 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of the North Shore Inc., 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 or to Day by Day Adult Day Care, 4R Blackburn Center, Gloucester, MA 01930.
