ALICE MISKIMINS

Alice Gehring Miskimins died peacefully September 5 in Vienna, Virginia. She was 92. Alice was born in El Paso to Herbert William and Madeline Mills Gehring. She was a graduate of Austin High School and the University of Texas at Austin. In March, 1944 Alice married Joseph Harrison Miskimins who preceded her in death. He was an El Paso physician and they raised their family in El Paso. Alice loved gardening and animals spending many hours tending her yard and fruit and pecan trees. She adopted many stray and unwanted dogs and cats that needed a home. As she was very interested in local history, she was active in the El Paso Historical Society. She and her husband participated in many Historical Society home tours. Before moving to Virginia in 2006 to live with her son, Mitchell, she was a member of St. Francis on the Hill Episcopal Church volunteering many hours at the church thrift store, Seconds to Go. She leaves behind five children and their spouses whom she loved as her own: Madeline and husband Roger Black of Albuquerque, NM; Deborah and husband Steven Gessler of Orange,CA; Diane and husband Donald Hurd of Annapolis, MD; Mitchell and wife Laura Miskimins of Fairfax, VA; and Scott and wife Sara Miskimins of Garland, TX. She was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her only brother Herbert Gehring, Jr. A memorial service was held at Church of the Holy Cross, Dun Loring, VA on September 13. For those who remember Alice in El Paso, a service will be held Monday, October 21 at 9 a.m. at St. Francis on the Hill Episcopal Church with Rev. Shannon Collis officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Humane Society of El Paso or a charity of your choice.
