ALICE EVELYN ROGERS VANHOOKNov. 23, 1932-Sept. 10, 2009 Alice Evelyn Rogers Vanhook, age 76, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2009 at Mayfair Manor Nursing Home, after a 25 year battle with Parkinson's Disease. She was born November 23, 1932 in Barrier (Wayne County), Ky., the daughter of the late Othal D. and Dova Barrier Rogers of Monticello, Ky. On November 11, 1956 she was united in marriage with Edward D. Vanhook at Elk Spring Valley Baptist Church, who survives. She is survived by three daughters-Melanie (Bill) White of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Katherine (David) Ritter of Lexington, Ky. and Julie Van Hook of Lexington, Ky.; eight grandchildren-Tim, Sam, and Hannah White, Perry, Dane and Sarah Ritter and Amanda and Max Wilburn; one sister-Lucille Eads of Monticello, Ky.; three brothers-O.D. (Doris) Rogers of Versailles, Ky., U.S. Congressman Harold (Cynthia) Rogers of Somerset, Ky., and Wayland Rogers of Chicago, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by one sister-Inodene (Lloyd) Tatum of Henderson, Tenn. She graduated from Nashville Business College in the early 1950s, worked in Tennessee's social services department, then moved to Somerset, Ky. where she was employed by Jellico Grocery Co. Alice was a retired employee of the Fayette County Board of Elections, and a former employee of G.F. Vaughan Tobacco Co. and Young Industries in Lexington. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching children's Bible classes for many years. When their daughters were young, she was proud to serve as a leader of their Brownie Troop. Alice worked diligently at whatever task was before her. She took great delight in her grandchildren to whom she was fondly known as "Honey" and was dedicated to her family and especially her husband. Alice and Ed were the best of friends and spent many hours in conversation about varied subjects from religion to politics, truly enjoying their special relationship. Alice will be greatly missed. Funeral services were held Monday, September 14, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Robert G. Baker and Rev. William K. Simmons officiating. Private burial took place at the Lexington Cemetery. Pall bearers were Alice's nephews and niece: Lloyd Tatum, Jr., Tim Tatum, Anthony Rogers, John Rogers, Brian Eads and Allison Rogers. Remembrances in lieu of flowers may be made to the Garden Fund, Calvary Baptist Church, the National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave./Bob Hope Rd., Miami, Fla. 33136 or Hospice of the Bluegrass. Milward Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
