1995 - 2014
Passed away on November 11, 2014, at the age of 19. Cherished daughter of Gleema Nambiar and Georges Emile Karam, Alissar will also be sadly missed by her brothers Thaër and Amilqar; her grandmothers Mona and Madhu; her uncles Naji and Gopal and aunt Myrna; along with many other dear relatives from India, Syria and friends around the world. The family will receive condolences at St-George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 555 Jean-Talon E, Montreal, on Friday, November 14, 2014 from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, November 15 at 9 a.m. The Funeral will follow at 10 a.m. and thence to the Notre- Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made online to [email protected] or to the Fondation du Centre de Réadaptation en Dépendance de Montréal, 110 Prince-Arthur O, Montreal, QC H2X 1S7, in memory of Alissar Karam.

Mr. & Mrs. Karam,
I only learned of your tragic loss today. I was gutted. My belated sympathies are extended to the whole family. Although I only taught Alissar for one year at LCC, I feel compelled to share this story (perhaps you'll recall the story I shared at parent/teacher interviews years back.)
I will never forget a presentation that Alissar gave to my history class. She wove a spellbinding narrative by using many cleverly selected and analyzed primary sources. She did it without notes and with complete expertise. She wandered through the aisles of my class like a seasoned educator. Her peers were inspired and totally entertained. She took us back in time and yet made the past seem relevant and human. Alissar had a remarkable voice and a "way" about her that I'd never witnessed in a fifteen year-old. I was disappointed when I heard she wasn't returning to our school the following year. I enjoyed the time I had with her. She reminds me that all of my students need to find their voices and their "way", although many may wait until adulthood to reach that sense of self-realization that Alissar had.
Again, my heart goes out to you and your family. Know Alissar left a very strong impression with me. I will never forget her.
