Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 26, 2014.
FRANKLIN - Alkiveadis E. "Al" Juris, 92, and longtime resident of Newport passed away at the Mountain Ridge Genesis Care Facility in Franklin, Sunday, June 22, 2014.

Al was born in Manchester, Aug. 12, 1921, son of the late Engelos G. and Angelika (Tsioulis) Juris. He was raised and educated in Manchester, graduating from Central High School. During World War II, Al served with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific theater, specifically on Kwajalein Atoll, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He rarely spoke of his service. Al was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for Valor on Iwo Jima. After the war he returned to New Hampshire, continued his education and received a bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire. At UNH he played football, and was on the team that played in the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Ohio, in 1947. He was inducted into the UNH Football Hall of Fame.

He married the love of his life, Vasilike (Bessie) Demetrakopoulas on June 20, 1948. They raised their family in Newport and became members of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church. Al continued his education and earned his master's degree from Plymouth State College. He began his teaching career in Springfield. Upon moving to Newport, Al taught grade six and became principal of the Richards Elementary School. He retired from the Newport School District in 1986 after serving as principal of both Richards and Towle elementary schools. Al also coached football and baseball in Newport and was an avid fan of the Red Sox, N.Y. Giants and Boston Celtics. He collected stamps and enjoyed playing pool for many years. He had a passion for reading throughout his life.

Al is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Vasilike, of Franklin, his daughter: Pamela Byers and her husband, William, of Rochester, his son Evans Juris and his wife, Lois, of Walpole (formally of Gilford); three grandchildren: Dr. Christopher Gordon Byers, Jenna E. Juris and her fiancé, Joseph Reinbold, and Alexa M. Juris and one great-grandson: Joseph Engelos Reinbold.

He was predeceased by his sister, Clara Mantalos of Brockton, Mass.
