Allison Black Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 30, 2025.
Allison Black passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 10, 2025. Born on November 13th, 1958, she grew up in Southington, Connecticut, and spent most of her adult life in Port Orange, Florida. In her later years, she made her home in Parkersburg, West Virginia with her sister.

She was known for her warm heart, gentle spirit, and fierce compassion. Despite facing significant chronic health challenges throughout her life, she remained a kind, courageous presence for those around her. She had a special gift for connecting with people, especially those who felt unseen or unheard, and she never hesitated to offer a listening ear or kind word.

In her younger years, she brought laughter and joy to children as a clown named Jigs. She found deep purpose as a scout leader for special needs Girl Scouts, devoting herself to helping others thrive in a supportive and joyful environment. Her love and deep curiosity about her ancestry reflected how much she valued family.

She is survived by her loving siblings, extended family, dear friends, her cat Cleo, and many whose lives she quietly touched with her care and courage.

In lieu of flowers or cards, donations may be made in her honor to organizations supporting COPD research or other medical nonprofits that help people living with chronic illness like the COPD Foundation or the American Lung Foundation. Her legacy is one of kindness, humor, and connection, and she will be missed deeply. Per her request, please reflect on the happy memories you shared.

First, we want to offer our deepest sympathy to Barbara, Rick, and family on the loss of Allison.
Allison Black was one of the finest people that I have ever met and had the privilege of knowing as a dear friend and Girl Scout volunteer for 25 years. Allison lived a very modest life but gave all that she had to many like myself and my husband, the special need girls in in her troop, adult volunteers, co-workers, and her friends. She always had health issues particularly with her lungs and a degenerative bone disease but she never let this stop her from doing for herself and others. Allison would wear braces on her legs and the last 10 years she would use portable oxygen to go to work in a retail environment. Allison was remarkable for all that she accomplished despite the many debilitating health issues that she had. I first spoke to her in 2000 on the phone when I worked for a local Girl Scout Council as a training manager. Allison was always one to fully explain any situation to the fullest and offer her opinions and solutions sometimes to a fault in a good way. She called one time and said that she was down one volunteer for girl/adult ratio for a camping trip and could I help. I did attend with her girls and what an outstanding troop leader she was for her girls. She knew all about each one and their special needs and how to work with them so that they got the most out of the Girl Scout experience. Parents would travel 2 hours to drop off their daughters to attend her troop meetings. Allison also prepared the girls to go on a cross country camporee in Star Center NW Idaho and they all had the time of their lives. It was her careful and detailed preparation of the girls and adult chaperones that made the difference. One thing Allison was known for was her attention to detail and breaking down complex issues. All of her girls also completed the higher awards programs and received their Silver & Gold awards. Allison also served her fellow adult volunteers as a Product Sale Manager for those famous Girl Scout Cookie Sales and she ran all like a well-oiled machine. She also worked with me in the training department as a trainer and an area training manager. Volunteers certainly learned all they needed to know to be confident to run a Girl Scout Troop or do another volunteer role. Allison also mentored many new trainers and they absolutely loved her mentorship to them. She also worked on nominating adults for higher awards in Girl Scouting to include my husband and myself who received the Thanks Badge. She made sure that all was done correctly and that each person received a ceremony as well as a scrapbook as a meaningful memento. Allison and I also did clowning together along with BUBBLES - Allison´s clown name - JIGS and mine DOODLES and we went to clown school together 3x and performed in various competitive skits. There is so much more that she did for so many. She also took in a woman- co-worker who had cancer and was being abused by a boyfriend and they became best buddies until this woman passed away. These two were a true inspiration on how they supported each other. My husband and I enjoyed our weekly phone conversations with her even though we had moved a distance from each other. Allison was also heavy into the genealogy of her family and she worked countless hours on this project. I enjoyed hearing about any new information that she had dug up and she got excited about finding it. It was very important for her to preserve this and share for future generations in her family. Allison also enjoyed the outdoors and camping and she camped with her girls and trained many adults in the outdoors especially on the Girl Scout property that my husband and I lived on when we worked for the Girl Scout Council. The qualities that we admired and still will include her humility, perseverance, caring, thoroughness, creativity, unwavering spirit, and undying friendship. We will certainly miss our dear friend, Allison but we take comfort in knowing that she is no longer enduring the myriad of illnesses that she had - she is at peace now. Allison - rest now in the arms of the ANGELS. You will never be forgotten........ From Rosanne Kelly & Dale Pedersen, friends forever

Allison was a kind and special person. In the early 70´s we played in the women´s softball league. She also wrote for the Observer and covered our games. We had many laughs together and it is sad she dealt with health issues. Peacefully rest Allison, you will always be remembered.

I had recently connected with Allison via email and Facebook. She was my dad´s half sister. She had been sending me some amazing photos of us when I was about 4-5 years old visiting at Grandpop´s house (her and my dad´s dad). I´m glad to hear it was a peaceful passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who were in daily life. -Heidi Black Dashner

Allison was my Aunt who shared her passion for Ancestry and kindness with me. She was my role model for how to live with a chronic illness. I can't think of many people who I've never heard say anything that wasn't kind but I never heard Allsion say anything but kindness, support, and helpfulness. She cared deeply for others and valued connection. My favorite memory was welcoming her to West Virginia. Many thanks to her good friend Mark for getting her and the kitties to us safely.
