My condolences to the Duncan family. I fondly remember Alonzo, Ernest, Buttercup, Valeria, & Michael & their mother, Mrs. Ernestine from when they stayed on 15 & Jefferson Street. I last saw him at one of the class reunion as he & his wife often came. He has held on a long time but his time has come to go to our Daddy in heaven. So rest in peace & power my friend. You will be missed as you were so nice & kind to all. Job well done!

Alonzo was 8 years than me and I looked up to him. He was a role model to me because he was so cool. One day, our bond was forever linked together when he came in and allowed me to ride on the back of his bike. He cautioned me to keep my legs up and hold on tight. He was about 13 and I was 7. At some point, I began slipping, and my left foot got entangled inside the spokes of the wheel. I don´t remember much of what followed but I imagine we were both catapulted from the bike. From that day on, whenever I get up in the morning or went to bed at night, a big scar (or tattoo, as I like to refer to it as) on the right side of my left ankle would oftentimes make me think about him.

Over the years, he would regularly stop by and I would coax him into a little boxing. He joined the marines after high school and was awarded two purple hearts. He came back to Gary and became one of the first Black police officers. He later was promoted to Detective, making him one of the first Black detectives. I graduated from high school in 1971. I was a little distraught because I didn´t have clothes to wear in college. I don´t know what precipitated it, but Alonzo came and picked me up and took me to Chicago to get a pair of outfits. That eased my comfort level as I readied for college. After I graduated and found a job, I wanted a new car. While I made enough money to afford it, I had no credit. The car dealership tried to steer me to a used car. I was determined to get that 1976 Red and White (my Fraternity colors) Ford Elite. I tried to get someone to co-sign for me, but to no avail. As a last resort, I decided to cop a plea and ask Alonzo. Halfway through my speech, he stopped me. He said, "I´ll do it". I never missed a payment and never had a late payment. When I made my last payment, I called Alonzo to let him know. He reiterated, "I told you Dennis, I wasn´t worried about that. I knew you would do what you needed to do."

I went on and got married and my wife had two boys. The first son we named after me. When our second son was about to be born, we looked through magazines, researching for an exotic name. I happened to be wearing shorts at the time, and by chance, looked at my left ankle on the right side. It was the perfect name-Richard Alonzo Edgington.

Fast forward a few years later, and Alonzo is having trouble with complications from Agent Orange that he contracted when he was in the military. I had seen him a couple of times before I attended a family funeral in Memphis. My wife Pam and I and our son D.J. went out to dinner with Alonzo´s sister, Laverne. We talked about several things, then the subject went to Alonzo. At some point, I let her know that our son was named after him. She asked, "Does he know"? I thought long and hard about it, knowing that I had, but couldn´t put an exact moment when I´d told him. I asked Laverne if she had his phone number. She did and I called him right there. His wife Sharon answered. She told me he wasn´t having a good day. She gave him the phone and we talked about some memories. Before we got off the phone, I asked if he knew my 2nd son was named after him. He was quiet for a second and then said, "No". We talked for another minute or two and then he gave the phone to Sharon. She said, "You really made his day, and thank you."
I told her, "No, that´s why I´m calling. I´m the one that needs to be doing the `thanking´.

Ernie & family,

Lonzo's at peace. Think of the good times and smile. For comfort read Ecclesiastes 3:1-15,17,19,20,22. May The Most High God bring you peace during this time. Lonzo and I had a couple of conversations back in the day at 1301.

I first met Alonzo Duncan when we worked in the Security Department at U.S. Steel. Later, after U.S.S. let us all go he went back to GPD and I went on to be a paramedic supervisor at the Gary Fire Department. I remember having some drinks with him and Eli Harris at Johnson's Disco. He was a nice guy. God Bless and R.I.P.

My pal my partner an amazing funny awesome Policeman. Buck said he didn't eat cat or Buffalo fish until I had our regular fish fry at my house and most of the Police Officer were there. After he tasted my fish dinner he was back for more. There are many wonderful things to say about Buck but that's still not enough. Thank you for your spirit, calm, humanity, kind caring nature and most of all for being my friend. Always in our hearts , mind and spirit " take your rest "
